Alaska Scientist Appointed to Fill Vacancy at Key US Arctic Research Agency

Nikoosh Carlo, an Alaska Native researcher out of Fairbanks, has been appointed by President Joe Biden for the final seat on the U.S. Arctic Research Commission. She now becomes part of a group that is required by congress to submit a report every two years, outlining key Arctic research issues for the U.S. government to pursue. Carlo, who said she is of Athabascan descent, has a background that includes a doctorate in neuroscience. She’s also spent time consulting for community-based climate planning, she said.

Satellites Key to Canada’s Arctic Surveillance Strategy

The Canadian government is bolstering its defense and surveillance capabilities in the Arctic with a focus on using space assets and new technology. Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said the 2022 federal government budget, released April 7, contains 252 million Canadian dollars ($199 million) to start research on modernizing the joint Canada-U.S. North Warning System in the Arctic. In addition, that money will be used for research into long-range communications and over-the-horizon radar systems for the northern region.

Research Project Aims to Spread Reflective Beads on Arctic Ice to Slow Climate Warming

A research project that’s exploring whether covering sea ice with tiny reflective beads could help slow climate warming is drawing concerns from Arctic communities in Alaska and tribal and conservation groups over potential impacts to the environment. Sea ice stretches like a blanket from coastal Alaska communities, offering residents a path for travel and a surface from which they can hunt and fish. What the ice also provides is sunlight reflection and protection from rapid warming.
