Free Cuban Film Screenings at Wexner
|
Tonight, September 6 (7 PM) and next Tuesday, September 13 (7 PM), the Wexner Center for the Arts is offering FREE screenings of Cuban director Sara Gómez's work.
Sara Gómez was one of two Afro-Cuban filmmakers to belong to the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) during its formative years, and she is still considered the first woman director in Cuban history. While she directed one feature-length film, One Way or Another (De cierta manera, 1974), her body of work is mostly made up of short documentaries that elevate the concerns of everyday, working people.
This two-evening series features new restorations of Gómez’s films— an introduction of One Way or Another by Ohio State professor of Latin American Studies Laura Podalsky, and a discussion of the filmmaker’s shorts with Ohio State student group Cinéseries.

New certificates available this fall
|
For graduate students: The College of Education & Human Ecology is offering a new graduate certificate in anti-racism in education. The certificate seeks to address racial disparities in education and provides resources for current and future educators to examine issues of race and identity in the classroom and beyond. Distinguished Professor Donna Ford, a CLAS faculty affiliate and expert in Black and Brown gifted education, is one of those administering the certificate program.
Note: This certificate can be pursued either concurrently with a graduate degree or as a stand-alone option for non-degree seeking students!
For undergraduates: Beginning in Autumn 2022, students can pursue the Intercultural Competence Certificate, offered through the Center for Languages, Literatures, & Cultures. To earn the certificate, students will complete a specific set of courses as well as participate in global learning experiences, which provide real-world intercultural interactions and reflection opportunities. Expected learning outcomes include: increased cultural self-understanding; development of empathy; and effective and appropriate communication in various intercultural contexts.
