Why Catholics Honor Mary
by Grant Biskner, Parish Office Associate

The members of the Catholic Church hold a special place in their hearts for the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. Catholics honor Mary in many ways, including through prayer, liturgy, art and devotion. We honor Mary because she has done a lot for the catholic faith. This would include how Mary had never performed a sin and was all holy so she was selected out of all people by God to raise Jesus. Raising Jesus and giving birth to him as a virgin could be very hard for her and for others to believe. Surely, she received many negative comments and other persecutions but her incredible strength during this time to raise the Lord is truly remarkable. Many Catholics today practice praying to other saints, but Mary requests for Catholics to simply just pray the rosary. By doing this, Catholics show great gratitude and reflection of Mary and her incredible life.
|
The Catholic Church reveres Mary as the mother of God and teaches that she was born without sin and remained sinless throughout her life. Catholics believe that Mary was chosen by God to plan an important role in salvation history. When Mary agreed to God’s will, Mary had accepted the mission of being the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. Catholics realize this courage that Mary had to accept this and Catholics reflect on her life and try to be as trusting and bold as Mary was. She truly had a great relationship with God because of how much she trusted him and to live a life of no sin.
|
Catholics honor Mary through a variety of practices, such as through the Rosary and other Marian prayers, the celebration of Marian feast days, and the imitation of her virtues. The Catholic Church also recognizes Mary as a powerful intercessor and advocate for the faithful, and often looks to her in times of difficulty and hardship. Through her example of faith and obedience, Catholics seek to be inspired to deeply follow Christ and serve the Church. There are many ways to honor Mary, and honoring Mary is a tremendous sign of respect towards her as Catholics. She serves as a great demonstration of someone who lives a virtuous life and trusts in God.

Special Collection: Little Sisters of the Poor
Each year, our neighbors at the Little Sisters of the Poor visit our Parish to share their vocation of hospitality to the elderly. This year, they will be at all Masses on January 7th and 8th.
Their need for financial support continues to be acute and considerable. Virtually all of the current Residents of St. Mary’s Home at 2325 N. Lakewood qualify for Medicaid, and a few receive meager pensions. But these modest funds cover, at best, about half of the annual expenses. The Little Sisters have ministered to thousands of elders in Chicago for 145 years. Your support will enable them to continue their mission of caring for the neediest seniors of every race and religion in a spirit of reverence and of humble service. Learn more about Little Sisters of the Poor here: www.littlesistersofthepoorchicago.org
