TRENDING IN OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY

October 6, 2023

Shalom CT!

Sukkot is easily one of my favorite holidays. If you’ve ever spent time in a sukkah, you know that its other message is one of both vulnerability and sanctuary.

Its temporary nature, its natural instability, the way it can be permeated by rain and cold — everything about it speaks to the tenuousness of place.

With a roof covering that must provide both sun and shade, we are only nominally protected from weather’s extremes. So, the sukkah provides shelter, but it also reminds us that we are not fully at home.

I tend to make the connection between our time in the sukkah and the experiences of refugees forced to flee their home due to war or weather or disaster. But it may also provide a memory of a time in your life when you were in a home away from home.

We strive to welcome you to our Federation home away from home, through education, Israel engagement, community building, volunteering and inspiring programs and events.

I hope you're keeping up with us because there are more fabulous things happening before the year's end!

I wish you a peaceful shabbos.

The opening of the Arthur Szyk exhibit at the Art Museum of Fairfield University was simply spectacular.

We are so proud of our partnership with Fairfield University, the Quick Center and the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies.

It was a deeply moving and informative evening.

If you haven't seen the amazing exhibit, RUN!

It will be here until mid-December and it's not to be missed!

Check out the other events connected to Syzk.

From Sex and Violence in the Bible to a Past and Present History of Jews and Comics, to Shakshuka, the Shuk, and a Startup Nation - Merkaz has begun its 45th year in this incredible and diverse Jewish community!

I am thrilled to be your new Head of School for this incredible gem, alongside our Program Manager, Sophie Greenspan. Together we have welcomed returning and new students and families this year to Merkaz.

We have exciting programming, new classes, and some long-time favorites, as well as our new and innovative Flex Track program that allows flexibility for the ever-changing landscape of student schedules, sports, and more.

We are now two weeks in with close to 90 students registered -- and more are joining our community every day.

Be on the lookout for our Merkaz Mailer, a newsletter that is All About Merkaz and don’t forget to follow us on social media – Facebook and Instagram.

With endless possibilities of learning,

Lisa

Head of School, Merkaz

So much fun at the Mozaic Men's Club Celebrity Breakfast, featuring heavyweight boxer, Gerry Cooney. Jewish Community Foundation Vice Chair, Jeff Siegel, was our uber waiter and Gerry Cooney seriously knocked us out with his outlook on life. One of the best motivational talks ever....and so many laughs!!

The Holocaust Resource Center is now open 5 days a week at the Federation offices.

Come visit us. Learn. Cherish. Preserve. Share your story, write a memoir, watch a film, or volunteer.

The Center is here for our community, so drop by for piece of Fairfield County history.
