JLC-Tech Pin-Up: Airport Improvement
Magazine Feature
The project at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood
Marshall Airport (BWI) got a spotlight in the September 2023 issue of
Airport Improvement Magazine. This project, which included an
almost $20 million renovation of Concourse D, featured our product,
the T-BAR FLEX, integrated into the DESIGNFLEX Ceiling Systems by
Armstrong.
The director of Architecture at the Maryland Aviation Administration,
Jo Schneider, explained the design intent for the space, "The project
team wanted to 'create a bright, light, well-designed concourse that
livens up the space, and replace old light fixtures with LEDs for
energy savings and longevity.'" Cue the T-BAR FLEX to fulfill the
exact design vision for the space!
Seamless installation of T-BAR FLEX into DesignFlex Ceilings is
feasible with a specially designed mounting clip attached to either
end of the lighting product. T-BAR FLEX becomes a part of the
ceiling structure by replacing cross members in the ceiling. Its low
profile helps to maintain the acoustical properties of the ceiling tiles,
and allows space for the extensive HVAC system modifications that
were made to the concourse.
Paul L Shank, the chief engineer at the Maryland Aviation
Administration, expressed the importance of the illusion the lighting
and ceiling had in this specific concourse of the airport, "'It creates a
wonderful lighting expression that is almost like arrows pointing you
to your destination,' he explains. 'It feels like airplanes in flight; it
feels like movement.'"
