September 2022
To paraphrase a line from the revered poet Mary Oliver - tell me, how many books are you planning to fit into your one wild and precious life? Did you reach your reading goals for the summer? Are you searching for the next great book to sweep you into the beauty of Autumn?

In You Are What You Read: A Practical Guide to Reading Well, Robert DiYanni suggests that by, “Reading well, you will still be you. But you will be a better and more interesting version of yourself.” We could not agree more.

Fall ushers in a whole new season of reading and this year is no exception as we anticipate the arrival of new works from many of our favorite writers, like Barbara Kingsolver, Russell Banks, John Irving, Wendell Berry, John Banville, and T.C. Boyle to name just a few.

We’ve also created a rich schedule of happenings this month that we hope will both inspire a visit from you and grow your reading ambitions.

Our semi-annual Readers' Rewards Sale will take place Saturday, September 10th and Sunday, September 11th where members may enjoy 20% off almost everything in the bookstores. This could be your jump on the holiday rush, or simply a needed trip to be kind to yourself and fill your arms with a stack of lovely reads. Please don’t miss it. If you are out of town or stymied by a flat tire - don’t fret. Simply call us to pay for your order or place one online during the course of the sale.

Our event schedule also offers something for just about anyone looking for a unique and shared book experience. We are especially excited to announce the return of our beloved Friday Storytime in our Saratoga store.

September is also the month we join with Indie bookstores across the country to salute the American Library Association's freedom to read celebration. Banned Books Week (September 18 - 24, 2022) is an important recurring spotlight on current and historical attempts to censor books. The event inspires the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of our freedom to explore and express ideas, stories, history, and art.

Come visit us and explore our banned book displays. I promise you your reading list will grow. Bring your family, your pups, your curiosity, and love for the magic and value of books of every stripe. We look forward to seeing you at the bookstore and are ever grateful for your support.

Be well,

The author of HamnetNew York Times best seller and National Book Critics Circle Award winner—brings the world of Renaissance Italy to jewel-bright life in this unforgettable fictional portrait of the captivating young duchess Lucrezia de' Medici as she makes her way in a troubled court.

"Fans of the ethereal and lush prose of O’Farrell’s Hamnet will not be disappointed by her latest endeavor. With very few known details about the real Lucrezia de’ Medici who died at the age of 16, only a year into her marriage, the author is able to craft a mesmerizing tale of her brief life. A vivid portrait of the times and the people, and a wonderful interpretation of a young girl not quite in step with her times. Gorgeous" — Tambra Johnson Reap

Pre-order Highlight

From Pulitzer Prize–winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Strout comes a poignant, pitch-perfect novel about a divorced couple stuck together during lockdown—and the love, loss, despair, and hope that animate us even as the world seems to be falling apart.

"Despite a personal history that, at times, was as painful as walking over shards of broken glass, Lucy Barton and her first husband, William, have maintained a bond that was impervious to the assaults of their divergent lives. William warns Lucy that a potentially catastrophic pandemic is looming and that she needs to abandon her life in the teeming metropolis of New York City and take refuge in an oceanside cottage in Maine. Self-examination is a natural byproduct of isolation and Lucy finds herself peering into dark corners of her troubled life and reevaluating relationships with both her ex-husband and their two daughters. In her typically elegant and spare prose, Ms. Strout perfectly captures both the tenor and the terror of our contemporary nightmare and, in Lucy's own determination to persevere, she manages to inject elements of the hope that none of us should ever abandon.."— Alden Graves
