Ukraine Studies Fellows

The Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) is calling for applications for three fellowship opportunities offered through the Elliott School's Fund for Scholars Affected by the War in Ukraine and in partnership with the Kyiv School of Economics and the Ukrainian Global University.


These opportunities are open to scholars who are based in Ukraine or were based there before February 24, 2022. 


The deadline to apply is Monday, March 10, 2025.

Opportunity: Non-resident Fellowship

Duration: 12 months

Timeframe: September 2025 - August 2026

Seats: 12

Funding: $800/month


Who may apply: Scholars who have already earned their PhD or Candidate of Science degree; are based in Ukraine or were based there up until February 24, 2022; are working on any topic at the intersection of Ukrainian studies and international affairs, broadly defined; are professionally fluent in English; and have not held this fellowship or one of our in-residence fellowships since 2022. The selected Fellows will stay in Ukraine or wherever they are based currently during their fellowship. Scholars who are currently internally displaced will be given priority.

Opportunity: Junior Visiting Fellowship

Duration: 12 months

Timeframe: September 2025 - August 2026

Seats: 1

Funding: $60,000


Who may apply: Early-career scholars who have obtained their PhD or Candidate of Science degree within the past 10 years; are based in Ukraine or were based there up until February 24, 2022; are working on any topic at the intersection of Ukrainian studies and international affairs, broadly defined; are professionally fluent in English; and have not previously held this fellowship. The fellow will come to Washington, D.C., for a full year in residence at IERES to conduct their research, participate in our activities and events, and possibly teach a course.

Opportunity: Senior Visiting Fellowship

Duration: One semester (5 months)

Timeframe: Fall 2025 (August through December) OR Spring 2026 (January through May)

Seats: 2 (one per semester)

Funding: $35,000


Who may apply: Senior scholars who are based in Ukraine or were based there up until February 24, 2022; are working on any topic at the intersection of Ukrainian studies and international affairs, broadly defined; are professionally fluent in English; and did not hold this particular fellowship or our Junior Visiting Fellowship previously (since 2022). The fellow will come to Washington, D.C., for one academic semester in residence at IERES to conduct their research, participate in our activities and events, and possibly teach a course (possible only for Spring 2026).
