The Color Connection In Traditional Chinese Medicine

The Five Elements system is a way of understanding the physical world around us. This ancient system was created to explain natural phenomenon from weather patterns to diseases of the human body.

The color associations in this system are linked to the physical and emotional characteristics between things in the world. The more connections we make between the outside and inside worlds, the deeper our understanding becomes of ourselves as part of the bigger picture of nature.
Zinc Supplementation and Immune Boosting

Zinc is a miracle mineral for boosting immune health, and it is particularly needed to encourage a strong immune system in the fall.

This season is focused on strengthening the body and tonifying the organs that govern our energy and lymphatic systems. When the seasons change, the body works to get rid of waste and make a successful transition. If there has been damage to your body with no break for recovery, your qi will be diminished making it difficult to prepare for the change. Supplementing with zinc will make a difference.
Grief, Immunity, And The Season Of The Lungs

The words inspiration and aspiration are related to the lungs and both contain the root word “spirit”. Our spirit—however you might define it—is believed by many cultures to be housed in the chest, the home of the lungs. When our spirit is heavy due to grief and sadness, our chest feels physically heavy.

If we don’t release our grief but instead hold on to it for long periods of time, it becomes stuck, constricting our breathing and our chest. Eventually this affects the heart—emotionally and physically.
Cupping To Alleviate Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain, frozen shoulder and range of motion issues within the shoulder joint are common. The shoulder area becomes compromised over time with overuse, leading to inflammation and decreased blood flow. In Traditional Chinese Medicine inflammation is considered to be stagnation not only in the area immediately affected, but also in related organ systems.

To relieve shoulder pain and restore freedom of movement, it is necessary to “re-train” the shoulder muscles to move together smoothly.

Best Herbal Formula for Summer Fatigue

Sheng mai san is a great formula for the hot Florida summer. Summer finds us not only hotter and sweatier, but busier and worn out from travel, get-togethers and many events. Too much running around in hot weather saps your yin moisture and causes qi (energy) deficiency. When you feel like you’re dragging and can’t seem to get your energy back, this is the perfect herbal formula to moisten, boost and stop the sweating!

If you are an athlete who trains throughout the year, this formula will keep your lung, heart and kidneys in a happy, moist and invigorated state!

Sheng Mai San is the most highly recommended formula for these hot summer days.
Best-selling supplement

Stress and tension in our lives can lead to distress of the digestive system. The liver stores emotions and can get stuck and stagnant, spilling over into the spleen/stomach and causing indigestion, insomnia and loss of appetite. That tight, constricted feeling accompanying these symptoms is the liver trying to hold everything together and keep your emotions in check. When the strain of this becomes too much, it’s time to CALM down.

Calm formula helps to soothe and spread the liver qi while boosting the spleen and calming the heart. It also softens stressful emotions, and overactive bowels. Also known as Xiao Yao Wan or Free and Easy Wander, this formula contains nourishing herbs to improve liver function, and herbs to disperse stagnation and improve spleen function.

I have prescribed this 1000 year-old formula more than any other herbal medicine.
The Best of Jacksonville Health
Biking on the Beach

Free, easy and healthy, one of my favorite things to do in the summer is ride my bike on the beach. Early morning and sunset are the best times to be on the beach, and the weekend is perfect for a 30-minute ride around any of the beautiful beaches in our area. What a great way to get sun, get away from traffic and feel the wind in your hair!

Jacksonville also offers many miles of bike trails off the beach, through woodlands and secluded nature paths. Get on your bikes and ride!
Inside Exercise

Exercising outside in the summer sun and high Florida heat can be dangerous if you over exert. Try these great indoor gyms for an active break from the heat.

Title Boxing offers 45 minute classes for a great cardio workout and some fun hitting heavy bags. These classes are also great for learning basic self-defense moves.

Pilates on Third classes are an excellent way to lengthen and strengthen your body. Pilates is beneficial for spine flexibility and building abdominal strength.
Nutritious and Delicious

Fruit juice in the summer is a great way to cool off, replenish and hydrate. Nekter Juice Bar in Jacksonville Beach is my go-to when I need a cool down post beach or bike ride, or I just want a healthy and delicious summer treat. Cold pressed in house their juices and smoothies are nutrient-rich and energizing.
