Greetings, Community Members and Partners – | |
I want to start this month’s newsletter by thanking everyone that participated in our annual town hall meeting last month. Community feedback has played an invaluable role in helping us design and continually improve the college. We aim to be a college of the community and these events help us achieve this goal.
For this upcoming academic year, we have several exciting updates as noted below.
| |
Electrical Technology & Electric Vehicle Charging Station Maintenance Programs
We will begin offering an Electrical Technology Certificate I program this fall at our Victory location. This program, which can be earned in 6-8 months, can set students on a path to being electricians.
The program will also lead into an Electrical Vehicle Charging Station Maintenance Certificate II program. This is the first training program of its kind for a community college in Texas. This initiative is through a partnership with the City of Houston and will be offered at the Bethune Empowerment Center. See article below for more details.

Acres Homes Chamber Scholarship
To help pay for college, we have several financial aid and scholarship packages available. One such scholarship is through the Acres Homes Chamber of Commerce for Business and Economic Development.
The Chamber is offering scholarships to students from zip codes 77086, 77088, or 77091 that enroll in a workforce program at the Victory location.

Premier High School
As part of our efforts to increase educational attainment in our service area, ResponsiveEd is locating a high school at our Greenspoint location.
This specialized school will provide individualized learning for students that may have recently dropped out of school or need to recover credits.
The students will have access to Lone Star College-Houston North workforce programs and dual credit options.

Supporting Student Parents & Working Students
Lone Star College-Houston North has some of the most resilient and hardworking students that I have ever encountered in my 20+ years in higher education. Nearly 80% work and many are parents. Therefore, we are working on a series of initiatives to help these students. A few efforts that will begin in the upcoming fall semester include:
-
Hy-flex classes: These are innovative classes that will enroll half the students online and half in person. This is a good approach for those students that may benefit from a class structure and interaction, but have a schedule that makes it difficult to attend campus.
-
Expanded Childcare Assistance: We recently received a donation that will allow us to expand our childcare assistance partnership with the Fallbrook Academy.
-
Free Textbook Initiative: Under the leadership of our Vice President of Instruction, Dr. John Maynard, we will begin providing what is referred to as Open Educational Resources (OER) for some of our course offerings. These are essentially free textbook materials created by the faculty in the courses. This will eliminate the costs of textbooks for students.
-
One-Year Schedule: This is further in the future, but our college is currently working on a one-year schedule that will help students better plan their work schedules long-term.
| | | | |
As always, I want to thank each of you for being great partners. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.
I wish you the best.
Sincerely,
Quentin Wright, Ed.D.

LSC-Houston North Career Services offers interview practice, résumé coaching, and more!
Quentin M. (second from left in photo) is taking BIOL 2401 at Houston North to complete dental school prerequisites. Quentin sought assistance to prepare for upcoming interviews at various dental schools throughout the country. An interview team was assembled and Quentin completed his mock interview with less anxiety and greater confidence.
"I had a wonderful mock interview experience with LSC career service, conducted by Dr. Jack Hernandez (2nd to right), Ms. Kim Dinh (left), and Mr. Sal Hernandez (right). The questions were invaluable for me to prepare for my upcoming dental school interview. Having such accessible career services like this can make a difference in a future career choice for attending students from Lone Star College-Houston North."

Our Panther Pact Emergency Fund is a safety net for our students, with 100% of the proceeds helping them directly.
We are the most diverse Lone Star College institution and our locations exist in the lowest-income sections of our system’s service area. However, for the past three years, our students have continually had some of the highest completion rates within the system.
We invested a lot of time into developing partnerships so we can help students in a cost-efficient manner. We've helped students remove barriers such as food insecurity, clothing and toiletry needs, textbook costs, as well as a technology divide.
Your contribution will directly support a student in continuing their legacy.
