Dr. Charles Lyford "Chuck" Freebern

1934-2023

Chuck lived his entire life in Southern California; from early days in Long Beach, to raising 3 children in San Diego, then settling in Del Mar for his final 53 years. Chuck’s early education started at the Army and Navy Academy Carlsbad where his father was the Commandant, and his lifelong love of music began. Chuck played the clarinet and saxophone through graduation and on to San Diego State where he was a music major marching in the band, playing half-time shows and was even elected to be the Drum Major. With music as his passion, he completed his masters degree and earned a PHD in Music Education. He earned a living teaching music, playing “band jobs” with some greats like Tommy Dorsey and Sammy Davis Jr. and even played in a polka band at Little Bavaria in Del Mar. But some of his best stories were from his summer job in college, running the elevator at the Turf Club at the Del Mar race track. He was an avid surfer and lifeguard; a real beach lover.

Chuck decided to take up playing the trumpet at 65 and played in several community bands for fun. Retirement also involved a commitment to philanthropy. He supported Mainly Mozart, the Old Globe Theater, the SD Symphony and The Del Mar Foundation among others.

Chuck is predeceased by daughter Julia Keck. He is survived by daughter Valerie Riley, son Phillip Freebern, sister Phyllis Manning, Grandsons Reagan Riley and Bennett Riley. Donations in his honor may be sent to the Del Mar Foundation

Remembrance provided by Valerie Riley.
