August 2022
I have always loved reading, and books have held important roles through the different phases of my life. They have been comforting, motivating, educating and everything in between. When I was given the opportunity to work at the Northshire Bookstore, I decided that yes, I wanted to work in an environment that helps connect others to the world of books. And I am so glad I did.

One of the most amazing things about a bookstore is the way you feel while walking through the store. It is uniquely personal, but we also find shared interests and common ground among the books surrounding us. Every day I learn new things, from the booksellers I work with, the customers I may be helping or from snippets of book jackets I read while shelving. Every day I am filled with curiosity about subjects I had wanted to learn more about as well as those I had never given much thought to. My “what-to-read-next” list is happily full.

The thrill of hunting for a certain book or topic for a customer is among my favorite parts of the job. To see the excitement they show when you can find just what they are looking for is so satisfying. Or, watching a child’s face light up when introducing them to a new book that truly interests them. It’s like being a matchmaker for the thousands and thousands of books on the shelves and finding each the best fit.

There is something still so magical about the simplicity of a book. They are familiar, reliable, important and have a huge impact on the world. And bookstores are part of that impact. I feel fortunate to work in a place so full of possibilities.

"Marra's first book, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, could stand as the crowning achievement of a writer's career. His second novel is another triumph by a writer whom we will be following for years to come. An intricate tapestry of characters whose lives connect over continents and time, Mercury is set in Fascist Italy of the late 1930s and early 1940s, and in Hollywood at the same time. The novel follows emigres and prisoners and people in power as they scheme with and against each other on a turbulent stage. The myriad characters struggle against racism, xenophobia, and political oppression as America enters the "Good War" and Hollywood is conscripted to deliver indoctrination films. Rising above it all is recent immigrant Maria. She is estranged from her mother, her father is confined in a prison colony in Italy, she endures a complicated relationship with a young Italian acquaintance whom she blames for her father's fate, all while persevering at a middling film studio where she is literally trying to make a name for herself. Marra showcases his expansive talents in this beautifully written, deeply researched wonder of a novel." — Stan Hynds

"The pretense of art is more elusive than Garbo at Mercury Pictures. The company churns out B movies on shoestring budgets under the watchful eyes of Artie Feldman and his brother Ned, two men who don't particularly like each other. Although Mercury is a minor player in Hollywood, barely managing a meow while the MGM lion roars, the coming of the Second World War changes the studio's fortune--for better and for worse. Although it is largely told from the perspective of people who work in an industry that subsists on illusions, this brilliantly original novel projects a beam of light through the dark days of one of the bleakest periods in history." — Alden Graves

Pre-order Highlight

In this powerful novel about the cost of greatness, a legendary athlete attempts a comeback when the world considers her past her prime—from the New York Times bestselling author of Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones & The Sixand The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

"No one writes a fiercely loyal, misunderstood, and independent protagonist like TJR. Reid’s newest novel centers around the questionable and undoubtedly cold character we caught a glimpse of in Malibu Rising: the ruthless and passionate professional athlete, Carrie Soto. At the time of her retirement, Carrie was the number one tennis player in the world. Jump to 1994, when her record is stolen by an up-and-coming star athlete, Nicki Chan. But Carrie knows Nicki is no match for her: and she’ll do whatever it takes to prove it. I loved getting to know and understand Carrie, and eventually found myself sympathizing and rooting for her. Carrie Soto is Back is an action-packed story of growth, resilience, and the undeniable power of family and connection."— Maddison Gallup
