Medication Administration

Today, we will take a closer look at the Medication Administration High Impact Workflow in Epic, and review the differences in the process between SCM and Epic.

How it Works:

As of June 4, the Medication Administration Record (MAR) in Epic is the source of truth.

  • Pyxis is no longer a source for medication/order information – this must be reviewed in Epic on the Medication Administration Record (MAR) to pull medication.
  • Narcotic or controlled substance waste still must be maintained at the Pyxis device.
  • When you see Central Pharmacy, this means the medication is not loaded in the Pyxis. Please look in patient-specific bin or Pyxis refrigerator prior to reaching out to pharmacy.
  • If the medication is not in either the refrigerator or patient-specific bin, send a message to the pharmacy by clicking RX Message 30 minutes after the order has been entered.
  • If urgent, make a phone call to the pharmacy.

  • Nursing can modify schedule of one-time doses only, not for scheduled medications.
  • You need to message the pharmacy to modify entire schedules.

Order Management:

  • No paper-based orders are permitted on inpatient units
  • All orders must be electronically entered by the ordering provider following Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) best practice.
  • Inpatient nursing will no longer transcribe paper orders.
  • Medication holds (both system and provider initiated) will be clearly labeled in the MAR and on the medication order.

ED Medication Management:

  • All medications must be administered via Barcode Scanning Medication Administration (BCMA).
