THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH WELCOMES YOU
|
|
We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
As constituent members of the Anglican Communion in the United States, we are descendants of and partners with the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and are part of the third largest group of Christians in the world.
We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world. We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women and men serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church.
Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.
We believe that God loves you – no exceptions.

WELCOME BACK TO OUR REVISITING RESIDENT, THE REV. DR. JOHN C. N. HALL
|
|
Beginning next Sunday, August 28th, The Rev. Dr. John C. N. Hall will be rejoining us at Christ Memorial!
Bio: The Rev. Dr. John C. N. Hall served nine churches in five dioceses around the country, with parishioners numbering from a handful to hundreds. Highlights of his ministry include tripling the size of one congregation, birthing a weekly beachfront church service, and creating a non-profit food bank serving 50,000+ clients a year.
A native New Yorker, John has retired to the mountains of northern Arizona living at an altitude of a mile above sea level. A novice woodworker he makes lots of noise in his woodshop,
producing cutting boards, toys, and clocks.
John is married to his best friend, Jean. She enjoys handwork, knitting, and quilting. If it has fibers, she loves it. Her sewing studio is right next to John’s woodshop, and it’s a lot cleaner.
Together, John and Jean have four adult sons, three daughters-in-law, six grandchildren (and one on the way), and a Silver Labrador Retriever named Oakley. They are delighted to join in ministry with the wonderful folks at Christ Memorial Church this August and September.

Book study and conversation with the Rev. Dr. John C. N. Hall:
"A threshold is a sacred thing," ancient wisdom tells us. In some places of the world, in some traditional cultures, and in monastic life, this is still remembered. In our fast-paced modern lives, this wisdom is often lost on us. Yet, world events keep calling us back to the importance of thresholds between peoples, and questions about hospitality between borders, especially when people feel threatened.
In "To Pause at the Threshold," author Esther de Waal looks at what it is like to live in "border country" and explores the importance of opening up and being receptive to one's surroundings, whatever they may be.
In three sessions via Zoom, Fr. John Hall will lead us in exploring the thresholds in our lives, and how we might cross them with greater awareness and grace.
Classes will be held via Zoom on Thursday mornings at 9:00 am.

ALL PARISH MEETING, SEPTEMBER 11
@ 11 AM IN THE PARISH HALL
|
|
A letter from our Bishop's Warden:
Two years ago we began our Clergy In Residence program at Christ Memorial. During that time we have had the joy and benefit of getting to know some wonderful priests who have served us well. They have blessed and enriched our lives and inspired us as we now discern how best to serve each other and our community going forward.
CMEC is ready to find a new spiritual leader and our beautiful new vicarage will be completed in the spring/summer of 2023. It will provide a lovely home for our new priest.
We will have an all parish meeting on Sunday, September 11 @ 11 am in the parish hall. Canon Alexander Graham (Canon Sandy) will help all of us in attendance put our vision to paper in a new parish profile that clarifies our churches priorities and will be shared with interested applicants. If you are a church member please make every effort to attend this important meeting.
Our search committee has been selected. They are, Dale Sands, Chair, Melody Mackenzie Lotspeich, Branch Lotspeich, Carolyn Lauro and Judy Wakumoto. Canon Sandy will give direction and guidance to this group and work closely with them every step of the way as we find our new Vicar.
Below is our tentative timeline for selecting a new priest for CMEC:
- All Parish meeting, Sept 11, 2022
- Parish Profile completed by Oct 10, 2022
- Ads for Vicar Position posted from Oct 15- Nov 15, 2022
- Selection of top 5 candidates by Dec 15, 2022
- Interviews on Zoom for top 5 candidates by end of January, 2023
- Steering Committee to selection of top 3 by Feb 15, 2023
- Bishop’s Committee votes on nomination for Bishop’s approval, Feb 26, 2023
- Bishop makes the final decision and offers the position to the candidate
Please remember us in your prayers as we embark on this important journey.
A Prayer for Transition:
|
|
Almighty God, look graciously on the people of Christ Memorial Episcopal Church. Be with us and lead us as we seek a priest for our church. We ask your direction and guidance for those who shall recommend and choose our new spiritual leader, that we may receive a faithful pastor who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries. Grant us perception, faithfulness, patience and joy, so that we may hear your voice in all our deliberations. Grant us also the desire and the ability to truly hear each other and those who have entrusted us with this process. Give us courage to respond and act as you lead us. We pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Blessings,
Rebecca Hullum

PRESIDING BISHOP MICHAEL CURRY INVITES APPLICANTS FOR UNITED NATIONS 2022 CLIMATE

|
|
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry invites all Episcopalians over 18 to consider applying to be a delegate—in person or virtually—to the 2022 United Nations climate change conference, known as the 27th session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27).
Applications are due by September 1, 2022. Adults ages 18-40, members of Black and Indigenous communities, people of color, LGBTQ+ Episcopalians, Episcopalians from communities on the frontline of climate change, and Episcopalians with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. CONVENTION 54: THE TRUE
LOVE OF PEACE
|
|
The theme for this year's annual meeting is "The True Love of Peace" as taken from the Collect for Peace:
Almighty God, kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth, that in tranquillity your dominion may increase until the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Bishop also calls upon the following Scriptures for reflection: Micah 4:1-5, Psalm 85:7-13, Ephesians 2:13-18, and Matthew 5:43-48.
The logo is formed with hands of different races cradling the Trinity knot that represents the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In its original form of vesicae pisces, it incorporates the Christian symbol of the fish. During these tumultuous times, the Bishop added the phrases "Peace is born from relationships ~ Unity in diversity."

INDOOR FACE MASK POLICY CHANGE
|
|
Christ Memorial Moves to Recommended Indoor Masking
Christ Memorial is keeping in step with the CDC and County of Kauaʻi guidelines, which now are that indoor mask wearing is strongly recommended but not yet required. As the prominence of the virus wanes, please keep those suffering from its effects in your prayers.

THE GARDENER ASKS FOR WONDER
Leslie Scoopmire
“Never once in my life did I ask God
for success or wisdom or power or fame.
I asked for wonder,
and he gave it to me.” – Abraham Joshua Heschel
Knee-deep in a prie-dieu of compost,
I asked for wonder,
and pledged my attention,
hoping to lose
thought of myself
in the prayer of planting (for
both are acts of hope)—
seedlings sliding like prayer beads
through my hands what was once
a ditch-side rogue’s gallery elevated
to rockstar status in repair of the Earth:
Joe Pye weed, bergamot, Indian
blanket, rue, aster, true blue
wild indigo, lead plant, blazing star,
columbine, Queen Anne’s lace,
even lowly clover and thistle.
Turn, turn, turn; the time to pluck up is gone;
the time to plant our purpose under heaven.
To feel the thrum of life beneath my feet,
human rooted in humus
as in the beginning–
almost like stumbling across
God perambulating in an evening garden
leaving behind dewy footprints fresh from bestriding
the sea, pacing off its measure in refutation of Job;
To hear the ethereal
music of hillside pine needle overhead
propelled by wind, the choir
of hummingbird and song sparrow bobbing
on risers of redbud to the overture of offstage thunder.
But now it has
come down to this:
God answers through
a single brave
monarch butterfly
fluttering by, the first
of the season (enticed by
suburban crewcut
lawns surrendered
and sacrificed as altars
to milkweed), and by the once-
quotidian honeybee delicately
and now heroically paying homage,
sending salvations of salvia and soybeans nodding, merely
feeding a planet…
and we rejoice at the sight, remembering
when we fools thought them
common
as a comma.
Here is our hope on the wing.

988 Suicide & Crisis
Lifeline is Here!
On Saturday, July 16, 2022, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline will go into effect nationwide. Similar to the 911 emergency phone number, dialing 988 will connect a caller directly to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and to a trained counselor. A Prayer:
Magnificent Holy Father.
I stand before you at this altar. So many have given you more.
I may not have much I can offer. Yet what I have is truly yours.
This is my offering, dear Lord.
This is my offering to You, God.
Your offering enables us to maintain worship, prayer and study during this time. Help us continue to provide a beautiful, flourishing, and safe "Sanctuary for the Spirit" at our historic and faithful church on Kaua'i.
Change to Automated Giving: Thank you to those of you who automate your giving and have a plan to support your church. Your consistent, planned generosity makes it possible for us to budget and dream responsibly. Want to change to automated giving? It makes life easy, especially if you travel.
Live off island? If you have a prayer intention or would like to pray for those on our prayer list, email our office. To be part of the church collective means we all share in the cost of being a church. We want our church to have inspiring worship; pastoral care for those in need; beautiful church grounds; programs to learn and grow; and tools to reach out to those who are seeking a closer relationship with God. See the different ways you can share your gifts, on our Giving page HERE.
