Come with me now,

along the

beckoning path,

silvered in mist

toward

the glimmering lake ...

From his poem ‘Lough Inagh”

Dear Creative Friends,

The summer is mostly over, schools and universities are back in session, and life is settling back into a rhythm as we head towards Fall and the end of the year which seems to be approaching far too quickly.

I am fortunate enough to be spending four weeks in France this Fall. Exploring other cultures and landscapes keeps the Creative Photographer inside me alive and seeing through eyes of wonder and beauty. The first two weeks will be in the magical town of Chartres and the second two in the landscape of Brittany. Follow me on Instagram if you'd like to come along with me!

In 2024 I'll be offering two international retreats, both of them in Ireland. They are at different places on the west coast of Ireland, each with its own focus.

In Mulranny I'll be hosted by Lora Murphy of Essence of Mulranny, where "Nature, Culture & Creativity Meet".

In Ballyvaughan on the shores of Galway Bay, my friend Jane Dalton and I will be offering creativity and contemplation through visual journaling and photography.

If you've been wanting to visit Ireland with a group of like-minded pilgrims and want to explore some of the countryside without having to rent a car, I'd love you to join me!

Below are a few details with links to my website for more information.

Love and gratitude to you for being part of my community,

Exploring the Inner Landscape in Ireland with SoulCollage® and the Labyrinth

May 4th to 11th, 2024 at Essence of Mulranny, County Mayo, Ireland

The wild west coast of Ireland provides a perfect background for this week-long exploration of our inner landscape using SoulCollage® as creative expression and the labyrinth to ground, integrate and deepen our experiences. Our retreat home for the week overlooks magnificent Clew Bay and Ireland’s holy mountain, Croagh Patrick.

Our time in this beautiful part of the world will offer experiences to explore both inner and outer landscapes, each informing and deepening our experience of the other. We are always most alive at our growing edge, the place where possibility resides, and our daily explorations of the Irish landscape will mirror this in the SoulCollage® cards we make.

Ritual and contemplation will connect us to the mystical energy of place as we walk the labyrinth made of ancient stones at Essence of Mulranny, our retreat home for the week, and as we explore Achill Island and walk a temporary labyrinth we will create on the beach (tides and weather permitting).

Creative Expression and Contemplation in the Celtic Countryside

May 25th to June 1st, 2024 in Ballyvaughan, County Clare, Ireland

Modern Ireland is a place where spirituality, history, mystery, and art are woven together to create a rich tapestry. Our time in and around the small harbor town of Ballyvaughn located on the shores of Galway Bay on the West Coast of Ireland will be a journey to ignite our creativity, experiencing the wild, magical landscape of the western coastline and the Wild Atlantic Way.

Through contemplation and creative expression using creative photography and book making to record our experience, Jane Dalton and Catherine will guide you to explore art as a contemplative practice with the Irish landscape as our source of inspiration.

From our creative art space at the Burren College of Art we will venture outwards with our cameras to visit the Burren National Park, the Cliffs of Mohr, St. Brigid’s Well, the ancient Cistercian Abbey of Corcomroe and other ancient sites to explore the thin places where the physical and eternal worlds meet to deepen our understanding of the ancient history of this land and open doorways to our inner world and creative process. We will also take a day trip by ferry to explore the nearby Aran Islands of Inisheer.

How to Be a Pilgrim

Air travel is like

ancient pilgrims walking on their

knees, flight delays and narrow seats

offer their own kind of penance.

You jettison excess baggage,

leaving behind the heavy makeup case,

knowing the rain will

wash you free of artifice.

Books you wanted to carry left too,

no more outside words needed,

then go old beliefs which keep

you taut and twisted inside.

Blistered feet stumble over rocky

fields covered with wildflowers and you

realize this is your life,

full of sharp stones and color.

Red-breasted robins call forth

the song already inside,

a hundred griefs break open under

dark clouds and downpour.

Rise and fall of elation and exhaustion,

the tides a calendar of unfolding,

a bright star rises and you remember

a loved one waiting miles away.

A new hunger is kindled by the sight of

cows nursing calves in a field,

spying a spotted pony, you forget

the weight and seriousness of things.

Salmon swim across the Atlantic,

up the River Corrib’s rapids to the

wide lake, and you wonder if you have

also been called here for death and birth.

This is why we journey:

to retrieve our lost intimacy with the world,

every creature a herald of poems

that sleep in streams and stones.

‘Missing you’ scrawled on a postcard sent home,

but you don’t follow with

‘wish you were here.’

This is a voyage best made alone.
