Attention Prescribers
Are you aware of these deadlines?
TODAY, June 27:
The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act requires prescribers of controlled substances to complete eight hours of one-time training on safely prescribing controlled substances in order to receive or renew their registration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). This goes into effect on June 27, 2023.

NEXT MONTH, July 1:
Colorado dentists will be required to electronically prescribe Schedule II, III and IV controlled substances starting next month on July 1.
This law is intended to continue to reduce the number of opioid-related deaths across the state and U.S.
The state recognizes that not all dental providers prescribe medication. There are exceptions from the ePrescribing requirement if:
- The dentist writes 24 or fewer prescriptions for controlled substances a year.
- The controlled substance is to be administered to a patient in a hospital, nursing care facility, hospice care facility, dialysis treatment clinic, or assisted living residence or to a person who is in the custody of the department of corrections.
- The dentist demonstrates economic hardship in accordance with rules of the board (Rule 1.9 D4, page 26).
