After more than 30 years planning and dreaming, this project got off the ground with a partnership between the Central Florida Expressway Authority and the Florida Department of Transportation. These two agencies worked together to complete the beltway around Central Florida. In late January, state and local leaders celebrated the grand opening of the FDOT’s final section with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. During the event, Michelle Maikisch, Central Florida Expressway Authority’s Executive Director, shared that the project had been anticipated by the state's visionaries and recalled the origins of the idea. “Walt Disney himself, on a black-and-white TV, imagined the beltway around Orlando, back in the '60s," Maikisch said.
The Wekiva Parkway connects State Road 429, State Road 417 and Interstate 4, completing a 25-mile toll road that aims to ease traffic congestion in Orange, Lake, and Seminole counties while protecting the natural resources in the fragile Wekiva River Basin. CFX completed work on our sections in April of 2018. To learn more about the Wekiva Parkway’s legacy achievements visit: wekivaparkway.com
