The Conference Committee has been busy planning for next March’s joint conference with NALS in Reno. This will be a great collaborative event, and should help add to the Education Foundation’s coffers.

Among highlights of these annual gatherings is the track for those studying for the LS exam. I first attended a joint conference in 1981, and was struck by the concentration of talent and experience throughout the sessions. Mind you, this was before Zoom, emails, and even FAXes. Up-to-date information at the time came in magazines, the (snail) mail, or by phone. The opportunity to join in the after hours discussions was invaluable.

And it still is. Plan on being there and sharing tips, tricks, and anecdotes.

Warren D. Smith, LS

President, CLSA

WHERE IN CA IS THIS?

The November “Where in CA is This?” winners were Luz Garcia, PLS, of San Luis Obispo and her co-workers at the Wallace Group, correctly identifying the San Luis Reservoir as seen from Highway 152 looking east towards the dam. Luz reported that her coworkers brainstorm the location together over lunch on the day the CLSA eNews is released. Also correctly identifying the location was Bill Tuck, PLS with the City of Oceanside. Both win a beverage at the next conference.

Try to identify the location of this month’s photo. Submit your answer to: Rob McMillan.

Remember to Nominate Your Colleagues and Chapter for the Annual CLSA Awards!

TRIG-STAR 2022

California places 3rd in the NSPS National Trig-Star Competition for the second year in a row! Medhansh Pattani, a recent graduate of Laguna Creek High School (Elk Grove), represented California at the National Competition, where he competed against representatives from 28 other States. Lauren Chen (West Virginia) and David Hernandez (Texas) placed 1st and 2nd respectively.

Pattani won the 2022 title of California State Trig-Star, beating over 200 students from nine high schools from throughout California. This year’s event came down to time, where five high schools presented winners, all having a perfect score. Pattani’s unprecedented time of 15 minutes 28 seconds beat 2nd place winner Sam Wilson (Bishop Union HS – Bishop) who had a remarkable time of 23 minutes 54 seconds. The State winner is chosen from the top winner of each participating school. Getting a perfect score on a Trig-Star test is no easy feat and each student achieving that score should be congratulated. They include:

  • Julia Bellardo (San Luis Obispo HS – San Luis Obispo) 38 minutes 52 seconds
  • Branden Gardea (Bishop Union HS – Bishop) 39 minutes 16 seconds
  • Ethan Ho (Franklin HS – Elk Grove) 49 minutes 30 seconds
  • David Deutsch (University HS – San Diego) 39 minutes 11 seconds
  • Nico Waring (University HS – San Diego) 44 minutes 27 seconds

Participating schools included: Bishop Union HS (Bishop), Florin HS (Sacramento), Laguna Creek HS (Elk Grove), Liberty Ranch HS (Galt), Mission Preparatory HS (San Luis Obispo), Paso Robles HS (Paso Robles), San Luis Obispo HS (San Luis Obispo), University City HS (San Diego).

Special thanks to the local sponsors who took the opportunity to reach out to their local schools to support the Trig-Star program and promote land surveying: Sereyna Cagle, Luz Garcia, Michael Hank, Russell Smith, and Paul Tonn.

If you or your local CLSA Chapter is interested in learning more about this program, please reach out to the CLSA Education Chair.
