Colorado’s 2023 legislative session was less bipartisan than in recent years.

There was also lots of dissent among Democrats.

"More than 88% of the 474 bills passed during Colorado’s 2023 legislative session that became law received bipartisan support. The bipartisan rate was somewhat lower this year than in recent years. There were also fewer unanimous votes and more straight-party-line votes during the 2023 lawmaking term. A new reality for downtown Denver’s half-empty buildings:

‘The value’s not gonna go back to what it used to be’

"It’s pretty apparent that most office workers enjoy the perks of working from home and are loath to go back to a daily commute, leaving a lot of downtown Denver’s skyscrapers half-empty on any given weekday. What’s less clear is exactly what that means for the future of those office buildings. There’s a lot of real estate that isn’t being used, but not a lot of solid plans for what to do with it. Intuitively, converting some of it into apartments makes sense, but that’s easier said than done ... - READ MORE

Colorado taxpayers will get even larger refund checks next year than predicted.

Here’s how much you can expect.

"Colorado taxpayers will be sent even larger refund checks next year than expected after state tax revenues finished the fiscal year much higher than budget analysts for the legislature and in the governor’s office predicted. The state may now have to refund nearly $1 billion more than originally expected, nonpartisan Legislative Council Staff and the governor’s Office of State Planning and Budgeting told state lawmakers Tuesday, increasing refund checks by hundreds of dollars per person ..." - READ MORE

Colorado to get more mental health bed options, new hospital amid “near crisis”

"The only stabilization unit in the state’s crisis services system that’s solely for adolescents used to help about 2,000 kids each year. Now, because of a shortage of mental health workers, it can take only 1,000. The other half of the children and teens in mental health crises are sent elsewhere, or more likely, left to wait in emergency rooms at hospitals across Colorado ..." - READ MORE

Family Violence and Abuse in Later Life

Family violence and abuse in later life is a pervasive and challenging issue affecting millions of older adults throughout the country each year. Because such abuse often goes unreported, it is important for legal service providers, and other professionals working with older survivors of abuse, to understand and recognize the types of abuse and common tactics used by those who cause harm to assert power and control over older adults.
