Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends and Members of the Ark and Dove Community,

I am away at a continuing education event, but I wanted to express my deep thanks to our Outreach and Connections Ministry Elder Katie Nilsen Johnson and her many teams for a beautiful reception for Pastor Jon and his family last Sunday. It was all very well done.

Also one last reminder that we have only one service this Sunday at 10:30 AM. I'll be back on Sunday.

Peace,

Tim

Verse and Prayer
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way; I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.
-Luke 10: 1-3
Be thou a bright flame before me,
Be thou a guiding star above me,
Be thou a smooth path below me,
Be thou a kindly shepherd behind me,
Today, tonight and for ever.
Amen.

-Saint Columba (521-597)
This Single Service Sunday, we will introduce two new (but familiar) responses. One is an "Amen", and the other is a contemporary Doxology. Our offertory will feature Kim Champagne and Paul Doughty singing a piece called "Oh How I Need You" by the group All Sons and Daughters. The song opens with the lyrics "Lord I find You in the seeking, Lord I find You in the doubt, And to know You is to love You, and to know so little else", which is a quote from Mother Teresa. This line gave the writers the inspiration to the concept that God is found more in the seeking than even in finding. It starts off in a slow, ballad-like duet, and then has a sudden tempo change into a more upbeat, folk-like tune. It is one of those pieces that will leave you singing the melody all week. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend, friends.

CAP Food Pantry Request
The supply of food items at the CAP food pantry depends on several factors, such as what the county food bank provides, the donations we receive from our churches, and our ability to purchase food.  Donations brought to Ark & Dove can be placed in the bins marked "CAP Food" across from the coat rack.

Donations can also be taken directly to the food pantry at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Odenton on Tuesdays 10:45-1:30 and Thursdays 2:45-5:30. The items needed the most through this summer are:

  • Tuna
  • Canned Chicken
  • Jelly

Discipleship
The Stewardship Team would like to extend our thanks to all of the congregation for the sharing of your time, talents and resources. Your dedication and generosity encourages others simply by setting the example. Many of us congregants have chosen to ease the process of providing our financial resources by utilizing regularly recurring Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Giving via EFT provides convenience for the giver and consistency for the church. However, you may find that during church services you miss having the opportunity to place your gift in the offering plate. It is important for us to participate in the act of giving as part of our worship. If you have chosen to give via EFT, please consider dropping an “I donate via EFT “ slip located in the seat-back pocket in front of you into the offering plate during the Sunday offering. By doing this, not only will you have a tactile reminder of God’s blessing to you to ponder and be grateful for, but we pray that this will also allow others to see how many of Ark and Dove’s members give of their financial resources and encourage new offerings whether they are from new visitors or members still considering whether or not to donate. In utilizing this card, a symbolic representation of your gift is placed with the gifts of others and blessed together through prayer. In gratitude for your continued generosity of your time, talents, and resources, have a wonderful summer.

The Stewardship Team.

Summer Challenge
We’re all aware of the vast divisions we face today, but are we aware that every one of the problems that divide us has roots in slavery and white supremacy? Yes, every single one. For those of us who are white, it’s all too easy to put racism on the back burner. While our sisters and brothers of color are forced to deal with race issues daily, it takes a conscious effort on our part to keep racism front and center. This is our challenge. Summer is a great time to read a book by a Black author or watch a documentary on a rainy day. Below are a few that I’ve been reading:

  • Rising Out of Hatred – The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist by Eli Saslow
  • Bad Faith – Race and the Rise of the Religious Right by Randall Balmer
  • Take My Hand – a novel by Dolen Perkins-Valdez
  • The Sum of Us – What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee
  • Tears We Cannot Stop – A Sermon to White America by Michael Eric

A new Netflix documentary, “Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America”, is one of the most comprehensive histories of racism in our country that I’ve seen.

How will you continue on your anti-racism journey and meet the challenge?

Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School will run July 18-22, 2022 from 6-8pm. Our theme this year is Passport to Peace. Children PreK-Grade 5 are invited to learn that there are many opportunities and ways to live as peacemakers. Passport to Peace invites children to see every person as part of God’s family and every interaction as an opportunity for peacemaking. Registration for VBS can be found below.

Opportunities for middle and high school children to help are available. We still NEED adult volunteers as well to assist with this amazing summer program. Please contact Sara Fox, christianed@arkanddove.org if interested.

If you'd like to make a supply donation, check out our Amazon wish list. Items ordered from this list will be delivered directly to the church. Please arrange for supply donations to be received by June 24th. Contact Christina Nelson with questions: christinajoy87@gmail.com.
