Hi, everyone!

Happy Fall Y’all,

For those of you in Florida, you will take your queue that it is fall because Starbucks has started selling its pumpkin spiced latte. In Allentown, you will be able to rely on your external senses to figure things out.

Growing up I (Dr. D) always viewed fall as a very benign thing. At best it made for something amazing to look at; at worst I had to put on a sweatshirt. Becoming a Floridian has totally changed that. Fall now is divided into part 1 'hurricane season' and part 2 'get ready for the holidays'.

At least there are pumpkin-spiced lattes to go with it. I do have to put a plug-in for my favorite weather guy, Denis Philips. He is on Facebook and works for the local ABC affiliate. He will post and livestream during hurricanes.

Here are his rules for Hurricane Season (which lasts until Nov 30th):

  1. Storm track errors past 3 days can be HUGE. Don't get caught up on forecasts that far out. You'll go crazy.
  2. Models flip-flop back and forth all the time. Look for trends, don't look at individual model runs
  3. If you didn't prepare in June (which you probably didn't), do so now. Check your hurricane kit and guide to see what YOU and your family need.
  4. Don't freak out.
  5. Don't freak out. Ok? We live in Florida. It goes with the territory. The odds of a storm affecting us directly is usually low.
  6. If things get bad, KNOW that we will be there will you 24-7. You're going to hear a ton of information. It can get confusing. Stick with us. We won't steer you wrong.
  7. Stop freaking out....until I tell you to. We're fine.

#7 is my favorite. We are here if you need us!

2023 AAMC Medical School Year 2 Questionnaire (Y2Q)

On October 1 we will send each active Y2 student an email from Y2Q@aamc.org containing a private, unique link to the Y2Q survey. The Y2Q is for all active M2s, including those who have begun clerkships - as well as any M3s who matriculated one year ago. Results of the survey will be issued next March, and aim to help school staff better monitor the learning environment at the medical school.

The median time taken to complete last year was 16 minutes.

Please be on the lookout for this email on Oct 1 and complete the Y2Q.

Did You Know?- with Dr. O

Did you know...

that a large percentage of medical students who skip non-Mandatory lectures find themselves behind on content the weekend before an exam? As adults, you have to do what's best for you, however if you haven't finished reviewing lectures prior to the weekend before an exam, this indicates that you didn’t have sufficient time to study.

Don’t Worry! YOU WILL Get your STEPs In!

As preclinical students get closer to taking step 1, they often find themselves slightly panicked about getting ahead in their STEP prep. We want to remind you that there will be time built into your schedule for STEP prep. Late Fall, of Year 2, you will be given specific instructions on how to successfully prepare for STEP. Until then, focus on doing well in your courses and on your in-house exams. Increase your fund of knowledge and use Scholar Rx and UWorld to regularly create (and complete) timed exams.

If you are interested in applying for accommodations for Step 1, keep an eye out for an email with details on our upcoming presentation. We will cover the processes and information you will need to apply.

Reiterating Remediation

Though it may feel like the end of the world, or an isolating experience, it's not. Each year, talented medical students find themselves needing to remediate after struggling with course material, NBME exams, or (in some cases) the Year 1 Comprehensive. Most students do not share this information with their peers, so you may feel that you are the only one, however you are not. Know that while you should strive to excel in each course, you can still go on to do well and successfully match after remediating. If you would like to chat about strategy prior to the summer remediation activities, the ASC is here for you.

Reminders

Did you know that the ASC has supplemental learning materials (books) that you could peruse for additional study questions? If you are interested in signing out a book, stop by and/or email us.

 A Message from Emily Pernas

Though I’ve celebrated my 6th year at MCOM, many of you only know me by name and/or email. I wanted to give you all a little insight on what I do within the ASC. Although I don’t meet with students for advising, I’m still here to help in other ways! From overseeing peer-tutoring groups and compiling practice questions, to making sure you get the resources you need to be successful. If you ever need anything, feel free to ASC!

Dr. Ciceron’s Update

Well, after almost 9 hours of labor, I was blessed to welcome my 6lb 5oz, 19 inch daughter into the world on August 12, 2023. It appears that she enjoys long walks around my living room, evening story time, and head massages. These days I have learned that the key is looking at the glass half full. Though I am sleep deprived, I can eat much more comfortably without all of the heartburn and indigestion.

Upcoming Exams

Class of 2027 - Core

 9/29 – Course 1 NBME

Suicide Awareness Month Activities

Here are some suicide prevention resources.

On Physicians Suicide Awareness Day Sept 17th, students wrote encouraging messages for their future selves and peers, and USF-LV campus had an art competition.

Some of the amazing messages you all wrote on the sidewalks outside MDD during the Chalk the Talk Walk on Sept 21st
