8:00 AM Service

resumes in Church this Sunday

Summer’s end finds an end to the Sunday 8:00 am service in the Memorial Garden. See you next year in the garden.

Godly Play - This Sunday

All 3 years-old and older are welcome to join us.

Our classroom is on the second floor of the education building.

Our doors open at 9:45 am each 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of the month.

We experience a Godly Play story, feast, work time, and fellowship in this holy space, then we enter the church service and rejoin our families at about 10:40.

If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Crandall.

Sept. 24        Your Faith and Your Money,

presented by The Rt. Rev. Drew Smith

This year’s Annual Appeal will ask us to envision Trinity Church as “A Tree Planted by the Water.” We will think about how trees grow, producing leaves and shade and fruit, and we will be asked to pledge our support so that this tree, Trinity Church, can continue to flourish and be fruitful.

Our giving is based on what we think the needs are – how much is required to support the programs and functions we value. But our giving is based also on our relationship to our money – how much we have and how much we can and want to give away.

The Rt. Rev. Drew Smith will lead a forum on the topic of how Christians relate to their financial treasures. He will talk about his own journey of faith with regard to money and possessions, and he will challenge us to consider our own priorities for giving.

Please plan to join us in the Library on September 24 following the 10 a.m. Eucharist as we kick off our 2024 Annual Appeal, “Like a Tree Planted by the Water.”

The Season of Listening

Trinity’s season of listening is that of the individual meeting, sometimes called 1:1s or intentional conversations. These intentional conversations are not about recruiting, asking for financial contributions, surveying opinions, gathering specific spheres of information, convincing anyone about an idea, or any of the other transactional goals that often dwell just beneath the surface of many conversations.

There is no agenda to them. However, there is a purpose.

The purpose of these conversations is for the two people who are in the conversation to walk away with a deeper understanding of the other person’s heart—a deeper understanding of the experiences and values that shape their interests, goals, and passions. Because these conversations are different from the kinds of conversations that many of us are used to, this work will be led by members of Trinity’s GHIAA core team who have gone through training about 1:1s and have been having them with each other over the summer.

Please stop by the GHIAA table and speak with Cathy Rowe to get a copy of the letter that was distributed last week and to sign up for a 1:1 conversation!

Or go here to find the letter and the sign-up sheet.

Questions: contact one of the GHIAA core team members, Ash de las Casas, Martha Freimuth, Heather Kramer, Kimmy Okeke and Cathy Rowe.

Trinity Book Group – October 6

Trinity's Book Group launches the new program year with a discussion of Cloud Cuckoo Land, by Anthony Doerr at the October 6th meeting, 7:00-9:00 pm, at the home of Jon Reik. The book is described as being among the most celebrated novels of recent times, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope, and a book. Book Group welcomes everyone, whether for one meeting or for many! Come and enjoy lively discussion and tasty refreshments! For directions, and to let Jon know you're coming, please contact him at jonr720@aol.com.

The Hartford Chapter of the Companions of the Holy Cross will meet on Saturday, October 7 from 10 AM to Noon in the Parish Room of St. James's, West Hartford.

Assistant Rector Joe Rose will present a program entitled: Wings of the Wind: God's Heartbeat in Creation. In Genesis, God calls creation “good” six times before humans are even created. In a season when that good creation is damaged and crying out, often contributing to the suffering of the poor, the hungry and the oppressed, the session is grounded in meditation, confession, and listening for God’s heartbeat in nature. Rev. Joe will draw from Scripture, poetry, and the Book of Common Prayer’s Baptismal Covenant to invite all who join us to ponder the cosmic scope of God’s grace and how we can extend our Creator’s liberating, redemptive activity to our neighbors. The meeting will include a time for intercessory prayers of Thanksgiving and Petitions. Stay and have lunch afterward; please bring your own sandwich. We will provide beverages and snacks. This is an in-person meeting.

Companions are Christian women who live by vows to serve God day by day: to pray and work for social justice and peace, the unity of all people, and the mission of God in the world. If you would like to attend or have any questions, please e-mail Kate Smith at Kate48smith@comcast.net

Calling all creatures great (but not too big!) and small to join us on Saturday, October 7th at 4:00 pm for the Blessing of the Animals.

Even if you don’t have a pet to be blessed, you are invited to join the celebration of all of God’s creatures.

Oct. 8            The Spiritual Value of Photography, presented by George Chien and ACF team.

Now that our smart phones have cameras built in, most of us take more pictures than ever before – even if we don’t think of ourselves as “photographers.” Often we take pictures without even thinking about it. But is there spiritual value to be derived from the practice of looking at the world through a camera lens?

On Sunday, October 8, we will have an informal discussion about photography and how taking pictures helps us connect to our spirits. The discussion will be facilitated, and we will hear from some of our “resident photographers,” including Rev. George Chien, Neill Derrick, and Rev. Jon Widing. But this will be more of an exchange of ideas and experiences than a presentation, and we hope to hear from you, too.

If you have taken photographs that you would like to share with the group, please forward them to George Chien at gchien@trinityhartford.org. And even if you rarely take pictures, please plan to join us in the Library on October 8 following the 10 a.m. Eucharist.

The Gathering of the Peace

One of the visible signs of the delight of gathering together at Trinity Church is at the Exchange of the Peace. Many parishioners have remarked that it’s one of their favorite times of the service, and who can disagree? It’s wonderful to make friends and newcomers feel welcome! In order to ensure that there is enough time at the end of the service for coffee hour fellowship, when you hear the music “I’ve got peace like a river”, please move back to your seats in order for the service to continue. The fellowship will continue to flow through the service and out into Coffee Hour.
