Second Chance Receives $25,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities® to Help More Homeless Pets Find Families in Massachusetts

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week In-Person Events to Take Place at Local PetSmart Stores March 18-24

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA – (March 14, 2024) – Second Chance Animal Services has received a $25,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to help prepare more homeless pets in Massachusetts for adoption. Some four million pets make their way into shelters each year in the U.S. With the help of this grant, Second Chance will be able to assist more medically needy pets, getting them ready for adoption and new lives with loving families. In partnership with PetSmart Charities, Second Chance will bring adoptable pets to their Framingham and Northborough PetSmart satellite locations with expanded adoption hours in support of National Adoption Week, taking place March 18 - 24, 2024.

"Second Chance extends heartfelt gratitude to PetSmart Charities for their unwavering support in our mission to help pets live better lives," expressed Chief Development Officer Lindsay Doray. "This generous grant is an opportunity for us to assist more pets facing crisis situations. With the comprehensive resources of our full-service veterinary hospitals, we can provide essential medical care to homeless pets grappling with severe illness and injury, affording them the second chance they so rightfully deserve.” Doray noted that the grant will also allow Second Chance to schedule more adoption events to help pets find homes once they are ready. The nonprofit’s mobile adoption unit makes regularly scheduled visits to PetSmart stores in Leominster, Framingham and Northborough, and also has satellite adoption facilities inside the Framingham and Northborough stores.

“Shelters across the U.S. are struggling to keep pace with the number of animals coming in and need support from their communities to bring pets and people together,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities. “We’re proud to support Second Chance and the essential work they do to care and advocate for the animals that come through their door in need of loving families. Please consider supporting their lifesaving work through volunteering, fostering, adopting, or by making a donation.”

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week is a special time during the year. PetSmart stores feature adoptable pets to meet and cuddle in spacious areas, and staff and volunteers are on-hand to make introductions and answer questions. Potential pet parents can also learn about the products and services they’ll need for the best possible start with their new family members.

WHEN/WHERE:

During National Adoption Week, adoptable cats will be available with expanded satellite adoption hours at the following PetSmart locations:

March 19, 2-7pm at Framingham PetSmart

March 20, 2-7pm at Northborough PetSmart

March 23, 10am-1pm at Northborough PetSmart and 2-5pm at Framingham PetSmart

Doray reported that the grant has already helped pets like four-year-old Freya who came to Second Chance when her owner was unable to keep her. “During her initial exam, we discovered that she was suffering from a skin infection and was also positive for both anaplasmosis and Lyme disease. Freya was with us for almost two months while she received treatment. Thanks to this generous grant, Freya could get the care she needed to give her the best possible start in her new life. We're happy to report that Freya was recently adopted.”

Visit secondchanceanimals.org where you can see pets available for adoption, learn more about their four full-service Community Veterinary Hospitals that are open to all pet owners with subsidized rates for those that qualify, and how you can help pets live better lives.

It’s difficult to trace the exact origins of the dish we all know and love as parmigiana. What we do know is that a popular meal called melanzane alla parmigiana (eggplant) has been a long-time staple of Campania and Sicily, both southern regions of Italy. The addition of chicken or veal parmigiana is really an Italian American creation.

Originating in the Italian neighborhoods along the east coast, parmigiana eventually spread to restaurants and published cookbooks of the 1950s. Before long, the dish was everywhere.

As he always does, Chef Rico will bring his unique perspective to this universally loved meal and will also be serving complimentary courses from the southern regions of Italy.

This event is $52 per person, tax and gratuity are not included. Wine, beer, and cocktails are available from our bar at an extra cost.

March 23: Second Chance to Host Pet Vaccine Clinic in Charlton

Nonprofit Urges Pet Owner to Protect Pets from Deadly Preventable Diseases

Registration is now open for Second Chance Animal Services’ March 23rd pet vaccine clinic in Charlton. Low-cost vaccines will be offered for dogs and cats to help area pet owners care for their pets. The clinic, in collaboration with Charlton Animal Control, welcomes pets from all towns.

Second Chance CEO Sheryl Blancato encourages local pet owners to check their pet’s vaccine records and take advantage of the convenient Saturday low-cost clinic if their pet needs a rabies or distemper vaccine. “These vaccines serve as the first line of defense against potentially fatal diseases like rabies or parvo. We're grateful to provide this accessible clinic to help prevent outbreaks in our community.”

Parvovirus and distemper in dogs and panleukopenia in cats — the most prevalent deadly diseases affecting pets — are preventable with a simple vaccine. An estimated 30% of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care.

The vaccine clinic will be held from 9am to 1PM at 15 Old Town Road in Charlton. Advance registration is encouraged as there will be limited availability for same-day registration. Rabies and distemper vaccines are $18 each and pet owners can register their pet for vaccines online at

www.secondchanceanimals.org/scasconnect-southbridge/.
