A Note from the Director

Happy New Year!! I hope you had a nice winter break. I spent much of my break in snow-covered areas of Wisconsin visiting with family members that we don't see often enough and cautiously traveling the hilly country roads of Amish country in search of fresh made meunster cheese, homemade chocolates and ornaments, and a new mailbox! Although a white Christmas was a nice treat, it was also good to get home and back to business. Our Pilot Project Program co-directors are now accepting letters of intent (see below). Starting with this spring PPP cycle, we will be transitioning from an email application to an online submission. The LOI will still be submitted like before but, once the proposal is approved, applicants will receive a link to submit the full proposal. The reason for this change is to enable us to better track PPP application information, making it more efficient to submit our required report updates, and for ease of sharing with reviewers. If you have any questions regarding the submission process please reach out to Hong Wang or Yogesh Saini. If you have any technical difficulties such as accessing the form, please reach out to Nathan Dunn. We need to know if this is not an improvement, as intended. Thank you to those of you that applied for the WNC Rapid Response RFP. Reviewers' comments are all in and I expect the recipient will be notified this week. As semester II begins this week, I will be begin my efforts to develop some advertising of the important work conducted in the CHHE. If you would like to be part of a small committee to help me, please let me know.  I have not received any final word on the CHHE renewal. I am still awaiting the reviewers' comments which, as I understand, is a good sign. Please don't wait until the last minute to register for the CHHE Annual Symposium - the attendance is capped and we have a long list of registered attendees already.  Wishing you a healthy and happy 2025!!

Funding Opportunities

Spring 2025 RFA for Pilot Project Proposals $25K & $50K

NC State/NIEHS CHHE is soliciting applications for pilot project proposals for this Spring. Applications are due by February 15, 2025. Applicants must submit a brief letter of intent along with a pre-proposal abstract or concept paragraph to chhepilotprogram@ncsu.edu by February 1, 2025, to ensure that the topic is relevant to the mission of CHHE. Note: Starting this Spring 2025 cycle, the full PP proposal submission has changed to an online format. The lead PI will receive a link for full proposal submission if their Letter of Intent is approved.

Individual awards will range up to $25,000 (direct costs) for one year and CHHE expects to fund up to seven proposals. CHHE will also award up to two $50,000 proposals (direct costs) for dual-investigator, multi-disciplinary collaborative research which requires additional funding and separate budgets. CHHE full members can now use the Voucher Program Funds for STC or pathology services that are part of a CHHE pilot project.

The CHHE Pilot Project Program (PPP) fosters collaborations, increases interdisciplinary research and aids in the career development of early career investigators to advance environmental health research. The overarching goal of CHHE’s PPP is to provide support for research aimed at understanding the adverse impacts of environmental factors on human health and disease. The CHHE PPP encourages multidisciplinary/collaborative approaches and the use of CHHE’s cores and resources. The PPP encourages submission of community engaged projects. More details about the objectives of the PPP and RFA instructions and forms can be found at https://chhe.research.ncsu.edu/pilot-projects. Click here for application guidelines.
