The Heat Is STILL On...
It's yet another upcoming weekend and week of intense heat, with 100-degree plus weather expected through at least early next week. Be sure to stay in air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day if you can, and try to check in on your elderly family members and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat. It's also an important reminder that if you have to be outside, please keep these few simple tips in mind:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid direct sunlight (stay in shaded areas).
  • Take frequent breaks.
  • Wear light, breathable clothing.
  • NEVER leave anyone, including children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

As the unusual Texas heat continues, there are places to keep cool and comfortable. The Lakeway Swim Center is a popular spot to cool down, with the leisure pool open most days from noon through 8 p.m. There are also a variety of aquatic classes and events like "Shark Week" coming up starting next week. But, if you need a 'dry' place to cool off during the hottest parts of the day, the Lakeway Activity Center (105 Cross Creek) is an option and is open during the week (M-F) from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. The Lake Travis Community Library is also open from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m. (M-Thurs), and 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. (F-Sat). If you have a heat-related emergency, please call 9-1-1.
Active Shooter Training
Officers with the Lakeway Police Department, along with the Lake Travis ISD Police Department, Bee Cave Police Department and firefighters with Lake Travis Fire Rescue conducted an active shooter training exercise at Bee Cave Middle School yesterday (Thursday, July 28). The purpose of the exercise was to better train first responders in the event of an active shooter on a school campus.

"The impact of the tragedy in Uvalde is felt by law enforcement officers across Texas and the nation," said Lakeway Police Chief Glen Koen. "The officers and first responders who serve the Lake Travis region are committed to preparing for and stopping potential threats in the area."

We appreciate the strong partnership we have with Lake Travis ISD, Bee Cave & Lake Travis Fire Rescue. For more information, and to see a video from the training exercise, follow and visit the Lakeway Police Department Facebook Page (@lakewaypolice).
