EDUCATION

BEST Course: Training Surgeons in Life-Saving REBOA Techniques

The Basic Endovascular Skills for Trauma (BEST) Course was developed to train Acute Care Surgeons in the use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA). During the course, participants learn about the scientific rationale, indications, and REBOA techniques to temporize life-threatening hemorrhage. The BEST course offers hands-on training with both inanimate models and perfused cadavers including ultrasound-guided common femoral arterial (CFA) access, percutaneous and open cannulation of the CFA, and CFA repair.  Laura Moore, MD, FACS, serves as the national co-director of the BEST Course and serves as course director for the locally offered BEST courses at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. In addition, Dr. Moore travels both nationally and internationally to run BEST courses at various institutions.
