"Freedom from Complacency"

Rev. Venessa Harmel

A Message From Our Visiting Minister

"Complacency is a blight that saps energy, dulls attitudes, and causes a drain on the brain. The first symptom is satisfaction with things as they are. The second is rejection of things as they might be. "Good enough" becomes today's watchword and tomorrow's standard. Complacency makes people fear the unknown, mistrust the untried, and abhor the new. Like water, complacent people follow the easiest course -- downhill. They draw false strength from looking back." -- anonymous.

Complacency can take two forms: those that are content and those that are overwhelmed. Both forms are a response to differences between righteousness that emerges in human life as the fruit of the Spirit and righteousness created under the law. How would you describe these differences? Which of the two lists in Galatians 5 to you tend to focus on? In what ways do you try to hold them in tension?

I am very excited to be with you in Worship on Sunday! See Blessings,

Rev. Ve

From Anna Marie...

Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

Charles Spurgeon once said, “There is a marvelous medicinal power in joy. Most medicines are distasteful; but this, which is the best of all medicines, is sweet to the taste, and comforting to the heart. This blessed joy is very contagious. One dolorous spirit brings a kind of plague into the house; one person who is wretched seems to stop all the birds from singing wherever he goes . . . [But] the grace of joy is contagious. Holy joy will oil the wheels of your life’s machinery. Holy joy will strengthen you for your daily labor. Holy joy will beautify you and give you an influence over the lives of others.”

I found this anecdote in the Christopher News Notes of August 1993. Author Leo Buscaglia tells a story about his mother and their misery dinner. It was the night after his father came home and said it looked like he would have to go into bankruptcy. His partner had departed with their firm’s funds. Upon hearing that, Buscaglia’s mother went out and sold some jewelry to buy food for a sumptuous feast. Other members of the family scolded her for it, but she told them that “the time for joy is now, when we need it most, not next week.”

In this text, Jesus spoke of the time for joy and the reason for joy. The seventy had experienced and done so much, they returned with joy. However, Jesus makes it clear what the most important reason for joy is: your name is written in heaven.

News from the Round Rock Area Serving Center

Spring/Summer 2022

In April, the RRASC commemorated 35 years of service. Round Rock Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was one of the original founding organizations and continues to be represented as a member church, with John Claymon as our liaison.

The Serving Center assistance programs include the food pantry and food distribution programs, clothing and furniture vouchers, Computers for Kids, Keep Round Rock Warm coats for kids project, the Volunteer Center, the Treasures Charity Resale Shop & Boutique, community gardens, and financial assistance for rent/housing, utilities, prescriptions, transportation, and temporary lodging. Last year, a total of $2,011,736 was spent on housing assistance for 3,066 families. The utility assistance program benefited 3,175 households with $454,259. The Serving Center refurbishes donated computers and places them with low-income families in Round Rock ISD and Hutto ISD.

In 2021, The Serving Center assisted a total of 60,254 people from 12,991 households– an increase of 33%. The food pantry processed 1.4 million lbs. of food. A total of $2,941,716 was spent on client assistance, and from March 2020 through December 2021, a total of $5 million was spent on assistance for families impacted by COVID19. During the COVID closure, the Serving Center added an online application and case management system for people in need to submit requests for assistance. The online application continues for families to access services at www.rrasc.org.

Last year, in addition to the food pantry, a total of 4,972 households received food from the Fresh Foods for Families distribution, and 1,296 seniors benefited from the HOPE program. The Serving Center will be the hub for an expansion into Williamson County of the Amazon Home Delivery food program of the Central Food Bank, serving homebound seniors, disabled, and Veterans. The Serving Center assisted the Round Rock tornado victims and was part of the Multi Agency Resource Center set up to assist households impacted by the tornado in March.

How can you get involved?

• Volunteers are always needed! Information is available at www.rrasc.org, or talk to one of several church members who currently volunteer.

• Donate gently used clothing and household items.

• Bring your recycled grocery bags to the church “donation station” for the Food Pantry.

Social Justice Group Begins New Book On June 28

The social justice study group will begin reading a new book at its next meeting on Tuesday, June 28, at 11:00 a.m.  Zoom link below

Uncomfortable Conversations With A Black Man, by Emmanuel Acho, forms the springboard for group conversation. This is the group’s second book on race and racism.

Mr. Acho is a native of Dallas and the son of Nigerian immigrant parents. He is the host of the hit video series by the same name; however, perhaps he is most familiar as a former NFL player and Fox sports analyst. He began his professional career with the Cleveland Browns and later played with the Philadelphia Eagles while earning a master’s degree in the off season at the University of Texas.

New participants are encouraged to join the group. The book is available on Amazon and in local bookstores.

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

After reading about Jesus’ response to ill, paralyzed, and demon-possessed people (Matthew 8:1-34), do you ever wonder why He doesn’t answer your prayers with miraculous healing too? It might seem God has changed His approach since the first century, but even back then, Jesus didn’t physically heal every hurting person. However, that doesn’t mean divine restoration is reserved for a lucky few.

Instead, the Lord heals in His time and His way, and how He responds to our prayers isn’t for us to dictate. It’s important to realize not all renewal is physical; God may know we need a different type of wholeness—spiritual, emotional, relational, or something else. Despite appearances, the Father’s promise of healing is for us all. So let’s bring God our concerns and trust Him with an open heart and mind. Then, because of His Son’s death and resurrection, we can confidently claim, “He Himself brought our sins in His body up on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by His wounds [we] were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).

Reflection:

What in your life needs healing today? How many different ways can you think of that God might answer that need?
