HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

Summertime is a season where we all strive to spend extra time with family and friends, see those from away and take a few extra minutes for ourselves. This summer is no different. As some start to feel more comfortable with travel and all that comes along with those activities, we at NBANH hope that you all are able to enjoy the season.

When we all return for the fall, we look forward to activities getting back on schedule. In the meantime, we wish you all a safe and happy next several months.

Thanks for reading,

YOUR SUCCESS STORIES

2023 NBANH Award Ceremony

Meet the recipients of the 2023 NBANH awards.

Résidences Mgr Melanson

Resident-Centred Home Award

Resident-Centred Home of the Year is presented to a member home that demonstrates significant progress in creating a home-like environment and promoting a relationship-centred culture. This year, this prize was awarded to the Résidences Mgr Melanson from Saint-Quentin! The Residences Mgr Melanson describe the atmosphere when entering the residence according to our 5 senses: sound, sight, smell, taste and touch. From the happy sound of wheelchairs rolling to the beat of the music, to the smell and taste of the meals prepared in the kitchen, the homes' vision and guideline continues to create an environment of quality of life optimal for the population they serve.

Chris Kingston

Lifetime Achievement award

Chris Kingston received the Lifetime Achievement award. Chris has been a faithful volunteer at Villa Renaissance since 2006. Chris has helped with many different programs including the Pastoral Care Program, the formation of the Foundation in 2013, assisting at mealtimes and recreational activities including driving the van to transport residents. He has served on the board of the NBANH, holding the office of president from 2016 to 2018, and again from 2021 to 2022. Chris was born and raised in Dalhousie and has always been a loyal supporter of his hometown, and the nursing home.

Nursing Home Week | June 4 - 10, 2023

Continue reading to see a few highlights from Nursing Home Week!

Residents at the Drew Nursing Home had a great during the old-fashioned Country Fair where residents enjoyed lots of treats such as ice cream cones, cheesies and even homemade cotton candy! Entertainment included a Petting Zoo and a Caricature Artist. The weather did not allow for an outside fair as originally planned, although everyone was pleased to see lots of rain during Nursing Home Week, to help with the forest fires.

A resident was crowned the first Resident Ambassador at Fundy Nursing Home! The Resident Ambassador will advocate for all residents, greet new residents and families with the welcoming team, invite all the residents to participate to the homes’ activities, a member of the Resident council, and bring forth any suggestions, observations or ideas to the management team to help improve the quality of life of the residents. She will have a very busy year!

For over 30 years, the community at Victoria Glen Manor are invited to attend the crowning of the VGM royals. All staff, volunteers and families vote for a resident to become king and queen of the manor. The king and queen receive a crown, robe and flowers. This annual activity includes musical entertainment, cake and ice cream for all. The queen has been on cloud nine for the past few days because residents and staff say here comes the queen.

Forest Dale Home hosted many activities to celebrate Nursing Home Week including the “Forest Dale Home Cup” championship. The “Silver Squires” vs. The “Foggy Cubs” will hit the hardwood in a gentle game of hockey with cheering residents on the sidelines! Other activities included the Day of Caring, members of the community spruced up the garden area for the residents, as well kite flying and strawberry rhubarb pie for all to feast!

At Foyer Notre-Dame de Lourdes, they had a themed day for everyday of the week, including a day to return to the 80's!

ANNOUNCEMENT

Recruitment and Retention Update

On May 22nd, NBANH’s Emma and Sam attended the EECD Partner Appreciation Event at the Delta in Fredericton. At this event, NBANH was recognized for our valuable contributions to New Brunswick’s K-12 Education. We could not have done this without the support of Nursing Homes in welcoming students for activities, CO-OP opportunities, and so much more. Please see one of our success stories with the COE here.

On June 1st, we celebrated Intergenerational Day in Partnership with the EECD’s Centre of Excellence. Thank you to all the homes who participated in the in-person Tea parties. A Virtual Tea Party was held on May 30th, hosted by Michelle Alcorn from Atlantic Cooks and her 82-year-old mother, Helen. We had five homes who joined, as well as over one hundred students, what a fun session! You can watch the recording of the virtual session here.

Thank you for your continued support in the education of our youths, we look forward to more opportunities like this in the next school year.

Understanding Quality of Work Life for Atlantic Canadian Nursing Home Staff

Staff in New Brunswick Nursing Homes will soon have an opportunity to share their experiences working in Nursing Homes as part of a large Atlantic Canadian research project. The study will examine staff physical and mental health, their work environment, and how staff quality of work life affects resident quality of care.

Dr. Janice Keefe, Director of the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging at Mount Saint Vincent University is leading the cross-province project. Dr. Rose McCloskey, Professor of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of New Brunswick, will lead the New Brunswick research team. The information gathered will help employers and government better support the overall health and well-being of Nursing Home staff in Atlantic Canada and improve resident quality of care.

For more information please visit Current Projects on the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging website or contact the study’s Project Manager paula.richardson@msvu.ca.
