MANNA PANTRY LAST SATURDAY

FROM THE RECTOR

"If Candlemas be fair and bright, winter will have another flight;

if Candlemas brings cloud and rain, winter won't come again."

I'm not sure that predicting the weather really should have much to do with our religious observances. But a whole host of weather superstitions cluster around Candlemas (today), even if most Americans have categorized those superstitions around Groundhog Day, rather than the religious feast on the same day. The bad news is that regardless of what has happened this morning among the rodent population of Pennsylvania, it's fair and bright in Augusta, suggesting a longer winter. But the good news is that this Sunday we have a robust observance of Candlemas/The Feast of the Presentation planned. We'll bless candles and celebrate the light of Christ at 11:00, and the Saint Paul's Choir will lead us in Evensong at 5:30.

Our 9:30 adult formation session brings back our annual Women of the Bible series, and the book group reading Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul will meet at 4:15 (ending in time to get to Evensong). Join us this weekend to grow and celebrate.

P.S. I'd also like to point your attention to a couple of major events that are coming soon. First, on Monday, February 12 at 7:00 PM Saint Paul's is hosting the inaugural Absalom Jones service by the Augusta Convocation of Episcopal Churches. This joint service, with the Reverend Billy Alford preaching, the Saint Paul's choir singing, and Episcopal churches throughout the Augusta area participating, celebrates and thanks God for the ministry of Absalom Jones, the first African American ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church (1802).

Then on February 18, the Bishop will make his annual visitation to Saint Paul's, with Confirmations and Receptions. We don't have a comprehensive list of people due for Confirmation/Reception, so if you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible.

EVENTS THIS SUNDAY | February 4

Rectors' Discretionary Accounts

Your generous non-pledged offerings (cash and designated checks to Fr. Biddy’s and/or Mtr. Kimberly’s discretionary accounts) on the first Sunday each month support our clergy’s Discretionary Account. These funds are used to meet urgent needs within our community, to further the ministries of the church when other funds are not available, and to support community programs and institutions that serve those in need.

Episcopal Relief and Development

Middle East Fund

9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

The Outreach Committee voted to send $1000 to the Episcopal Relief and Development Middle East Fund. We will collect gifts from the parish, and then will send a combined check from the people of Saint Paul’s Tuesday, February 20. If you would like to add your gift, please make your check payable to Saint Paul’s Church with a notation ERD Middle East Fund. Online gifts may be made on our website. (Choose Special Offering Fund and Episcopal Relief and Development Sub-fund).

Your gift to the Middle East Fund will support the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and Al-Ahli Arab Hospital as they offer critical health services to those impacted by the current crisis in Gaza. Through your generosity, we are able to provide medicine and other supplies to help our partners tend to the physical and psychosocial wounds of this conflict. For more information about the work of ERD, visit episcopalrelief.org
