Resource of the Month:

"June 2023 is National Ocean Month "

On May 31, 2023, President Joseph Biden issued a Proclamation establishing June 2023 as National Ocean Month. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/05/31/a-proclamation-on-national-ocean-month-2023/?utm_source=link

"It is hard to imagine just how much of the ocean we have yet to discover and what possibilities for the future of human and planetary health, as well as for our economy, lie beneath its surface. This National Ocean Month, let us honor its beauty and bounty with action and commit to protecting and conserving it for generations to come." Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

Mrs. Frances Gunter

On Friday, June 2nd, we lost a friend of Gunter Library, Mrs. Frances Gunter. This fine Southern lady was the wife of our library’s namesake, Dr. Gordon Gunter (1909-1998). Mrs. Gunter was a frequent guest at our annual end-of-the-year open house. Her obituary is linked here. https://www.bradfordokeefe.com/obituaries/frances-gunter

Meet Gunter Library's Summer Assistants for Session I

Hello everyone! My name is Fiona and I'm here for the summer from Northwest Missouri State University. My home is in St. Charles, Illinois, which is a beautiful town about forty minutes outside Chicago. At Northwest, I am a double major in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation and Marine Biology, and I am president of our school's Marine Biology Society. My favorite marine animal is a harbour seal, and it is an aspiration of mine to one day go to Ireland and work with harbour seal conservation there. Here in the states, I have an interest in marine macroinvertebrates and coastal ecosystems and would like to do work in the future establishing restoration plans for mangrove and kelp forests. I've been greatly enjoying my time here at USM these past few weeks and can't wait to see what the program has in store for me for the rest of the summer. Hope to see you at the library!

Hi my name is Kayla Osbourne, I am from Spring Texas and I am a biology major at Sam Houston State University. I’ve always been interested in marine biology and I saw the summer field program as an opportunity to dip my toes in and discover what about marine sciences I’m most interested in. So far I have had an amazing  experience and have learned a lot. Some fun facts about me are that I have two dogs at home named Copper and Chewy and I am an identical twin!

Pride Display at USM's Gulf Coast Library

Gulf Coast Librarians Samantha Bull and Justin Easterday put together a Pride Month display for June in the lobby of the Gulf Coast Library. This display highlights items from the library’s collection created by members of the LGBTQ+ community or items that highlight LGBTQ+ history. This display also highlights university resources available through the IME and PRISM Center located on the Hattiesburg campus. Happy Pride!
