Dear LA Civil Rights Family,

March is Women's History Month, a time dedicated to honoring, celebrating, and recognizing the remarkable contributions women have made throughout history.

This month, the Association of Black City Attorney

honored me with the first ever Kimberly Willis Community Service and Engagement Award!

Kimberly Willis was a close friend, mentor, gem, and a TRUE public servant, who worked as a Deputy City Attorney until her untimely death at age 51. With the unwavering backing of individuals at the Office of the City Attorney, I navigated challenges on my journey to becoming the founding Executive Director and General Manager of Los Angeles' first civil rights department. Their support enabled me to inspire women and girls on their path to success.

I draw inspiration from my esteemed City leaders, including , Mayor Karen Bass, Fire Chief Kristen Crowley, City Attorney Hydee Feldstein-Soto, and the seven women elected to the LA City Council. Their commitment to fostering diverse representation sets a powerful example, demonstrating that barriers can be overcome. At LA Civil Rights, our women-led management team strengthens our department, and we actively cultivate a network of women leaders within the department and across our five commissions.

Together, let's honor the resilience, courage, and brilliance of women who have shaped our past, present, and future. I look forward to collaborating with you to build an inclusive and equitable Los Angeles, alongside the future women leaders of our great City of Angels.

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

- Capri Maddox

The Space Race Film Screening at LA Live

To commemorate African American Heritage Month, while also embracing Women's History Month, Communities in Schools Los Angeles and LA Civil Rights joined forces to present a special screening of The Space Race. This film delves into the untold stories of the first Black astronauts in space and sheds light on the underrepresentation of African Americans in the aeronautics industry.

Following the film screening, a dynamic panel discussion addressed the broader issue of underrepresentation of women and girls in STEM and aeronautics.

Thank you to Councilmember Curren Price, panelists Joey Jefferson of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) & Monique Hudson of California Science Center Foundation, and attendees for joining us at this event.

Collaboration with the

Langston M. Bar Association

LA Civil Rights collaborated with the Langston Bar Association to host a networking event tailored for attorneys. The event featured a presentation by Langston President Melvin Felton and Attorney George Fatheree III. Fatheree offered valuable legal insights on his work to have Bruce’s Beach returned to the descendants of the original owners nearly 100 years after it was seized by the City of Manhattan Beach. Our Assistant General Manager, Kim Kasreliovich, provided essential information on reporting instances of hate and discrimination to our Civil Rights Enforcement Unit under the Civil and Human Rights Law.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the attorneys who joined us for this insightful and engaging event. Your presence contributed to its success, and we look forward to future opportunities for collaboration.

LA Civil Rights and LA County District Attorney Discuss Violence Against Black Women and Girls

LA Civil Rights Director of Office of Race & Equity, Diamond James, participated in the “Justice for Black Women Healing, Hope, and Prevention” panel hosted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Panelists included Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager, CASA of LA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Charity Chandler-Cole, and Director of LA District Attorney’s Office of Bureau of Victim Services Tanishia Wright.

Last year, LA Civil Rights published an equity analysis, Violence Against Black & Latina Women Report. Despite comprising only around 4.3% of the city's population, from 2011 to 2022, Black women consistently accounted for approximately 25% to 33% of female victims of violence. Following the release of the report, LA Civil Rights worked with Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Councilman Curren Price, and Councilwoman Heather Hutt, to create “Blooming Beyond,” a resource guide of local community organizations supporting women and girls experiencing violence in Los Angeles.

We are honored to work with our community partners, elected officials, and local leaders to reduce violence against women and girls in LA.
