Attend the Family & Independent Owners meeting and see the Pittsburgh Pirates play, too!
The Family & Independent Owners meeting is a unique opportunity to gather and collaborate with other newspaper families that have similar business organizations, challenges and opportunities.

This meeting promises to be a fun, can’t miss chance to gather with other executives to hear what’s working and what needs to change.

Cameron Nutting Williams, president of America’s Newspapers and CRO of Ogden Newspapers, will be hosting the group at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In addition to meeting with other family owners, attendees will see the Pirates in action on Tuesday night, July 18.

The Family & Independent Owners Meeting is dedicated to the most relevant topics for independently owned organizations. Topics for this meeting include:

  • What's Your Newspaper Worth? Case studies on the value of local organizations and how to maximize value.
  • The Value of Independently Owned Newspapers to Your Community. How to leverage your value to local advertisers and business partners.
  • Broadening Your Platform. Strategies for diversification, what's working and the challenges.
  • Managing Family Dynamics. Candid discussions on managing family transitions.
  • And more!

The Family & Independent Owners meeting is intended for owners and family members directly involved in the newspaper organization of independently owned newspapers. The C-Suite/Senior Executive/Publisher of these newspapers can also be invited to attend by the organization’s owner to represent the company.

In an AI world, trusted news is ever more essential
By Reed Anfinson, publisher of the Swift County Monitor-News in Benson, Minnesota

Perhaps we’ve been wrong about there not being any newspapers left once your community newspaper’s starvation diet of internet pennies and lost print advertising kills it. Maybe wrong, but not in a good way. We are being replaced by sophisticated sources of misinformation and journalism-destroying Wall Street investors.

Three kinds of “newspapers” are slinking into our communities: hedge fund-owned newspapers, pink slime newspapers and now artificial intelligence newspapers.

"Deceiving the reader is going to become AI-assisted child’s play. Where does that leave citizens of a representative democracy who depend on trusted information to assess those elected to serve their needs?"
"Thank you to Senator Klobuchar, Senator Kennedy and the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee for their support of the JCPA. America’s Newspapers also applauds the News/Media Alliance for the great work that has been done on behalf of local newspapers to bring this legislation to this point. Today’s passage of the JCPA by the bipartisan Senate Judiciary Committee is an important step in helping newspapers be fairly compensated by Big Tech companies for the use of their valuable content."

Senate Judiciary Committee passes bipartisan Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA)
The Senate Judiciary Committee has favorably voted 14-7 for the bipartisan Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) (S. 1094), which would allow digital journalism providers to collectively negotiate with Google and Facebook for fair compensation for use of their valuable content.

The tech platforms are the dominant distributors of news content, reaping tremendous financial benefit without compensation to those who create the content. They also capture the majority of U.S. digital ad revenue, leaving local publishers with little to reinvest in the production of high-quality journalism.
