Reminder - KCE Grant Deadlines

A quick reminder that the fall grant deadline is September 1st. The page on the new site can be accessed HERE.

If you encounter challenges accessing the site, email us at KSCE@ksu.edu and we will be happy to assist.

Wishing you the best in your endeavors! –

Reporting and Enrollment Links

While the recording of new instructional and walk-through videos progresses, we wanted to let you know where to find the enrollment and reporting areas on the new website.

To enroll in the program, you will find a link to the database at the top of this page. Also, on this page you will find a readiness assessment and link to the newest Resolution of Government support. You can go directly to the enrollment portion of the database here if you're already familiar with the other information. Notice the enrollment database should be familiar looking and works the same as it has in recent years.

For reporting you can find a link at the top of this page or go directly to the reporting side of the database here. You can log in to enter your quarterly reports and photos as well as search previous reports for your community.

If you run into any difficulties or would like us to walk you through the process, just let us know!

Jan Steen, Co-Coordinator of Kansas Community Empowerment, jmsteen@ksu.edu

SEED Grants - New Funding Available!

Another round of SEED grants is upon us! SEED (Strategic Economic Expansion and Development) grant applications open August 28 and $275,000 has been made available to eligible communities. To learn more about this opportunity to boost economic development and revitalize your community, visit the Kansas Department of Commerce here (or click the image below): https://www.kansascommerce.gov/2023/08/seed-grants-available-to-invest-in-rural-quality-of-life-initiatives/

Sponsor Spotlight: Nex-Tech

Nex-Tech has been serving Kansas communities with communications solutions since the 1950s. They know bringing communities the best technology is important, but so is investing their time and talents where they do business. Supporting local is part of their DNA. Working with projects relating to schools, parks, organizations, sports teams and other causes, you may very well see a project they've been involved with as you travel around the state.

We thank Nex-Tech for their support of Kansas communities through their own work and for their sponsorship of the program! You can visit their website to learn more about them and their efforts in Kansas.

Community Happenings Around Kansas

Content for this section comes from emails, quarterly reports, social media posts, and community website updates. If you'd like to highlight recent activities or promote an upcoming event in a future newsletter, email us at: ksce@ksu.edu.

Potwin PRIDE's very own Melvina Jones was featured in a recent Kansas Profiles segment presented by Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd Institute for Rural Development. You can learn more about Melvina's work to support Potwin's community garden and other projects, as well as Potwin's efforts as part of the Kansas Community Empowerment program by going here for a text version of the article, or here for the audio version.

McFarland PRIDE has been busy recently. Volunteers painted the ballpark dugouts and concession stand, collaborated with others to get a new flagpole installed at the city park entrance, and have taken on fundraising for more flagpole sets to be hung on electric poles throughout town. McFarland PRIDE volunteers also do their part to keep the roads clean by participating in Adopt-A-Highway cleanup efforts along highway K-185.

Arlington Community PRIDE nominated KG Medical, LLC for the 2023 Rising Star Award. Jan presented the award to Kristin Goetz, APRN-CNP. KG Medical isn't just working to improve the quality and length of life of area residents, they are also very involved in community and school events. Congratulations!

Alton PRIDE hosted the 2023 Alton Jubilee recently. Jan presented Alton PRIDE president, Ginger Howell, with a Rising Star award, and Wilda Carswell accepted Project Excellence awards on behalf of the organization. These awards were for the Alton Summer Jubilee and for the Ladies' Night Out project. Fun activities including a parade, car show, and chicken rivalry contest were enjoyed by all. Great work, Alton!

Ginger Howell, Alton PRIDE president, receiving the Rising Star Award.

Chicken rivalry is much more than wearing a chicken suit, dancing around, and delivering eggs to the brooding box. It's a fun, friendly competition that brings out the creativity, and the crowds!

HEAL Grant Application Window Open Now

In case you missed our post on Facebook, the Kansas Department of Commerce announced that the application window for Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL) grants to revitalize dilapidated and underutilized downtown buildings in small communities across the state is now live! You can view a press release, a recording of the recent HEAL webinar, and application materials here.

KCE/K-State Research and Extension Grant Writing Workshop

Don't forget to register for our Grant Writing Workshop! We're hosting a grant writing workshop in partnership with K-State Research and Extension on December 5th and 7th from 6:00-8:30 PM. This two-night workshop is being offered in response to requests to have an evening offering instead of the traditional daytime events.

Thanks to additional funding pledged by the Kansas Department of Commerce, the first twelve registrants representing Kansas Community Empowerment (PRIDE) committees are eligible for a reimbursement scholarship upon completion of the workshop. Email Jan at jmsteen@ksu.edu after you register to get on the list.

Click on the image below or here to register for the workshop.

Continuing Opportunities Section

K-State Research and Extension offers entrepreneurship webinars every first Friday of the month. Visit our webpage for all past sessions. Registration for upcoming sessions can be found HERE.

Can't make it to our December Grant Writing Workshop? Other workshops are added to the schedule frequently - and there's now a micro-credential option for completion of the class and supporting documents showing evidence of learning.

Participants have reported receiving over $38 million in successful grants in their first year after taking the workshop. Classes are online and named for a local unit co-host - anyone can register by clicking HERE.

Grant Search Update

At the end of the next section, we have been announcing that you can contact us to assist in your search for external grant sources outside of Kansas Community Empowerment's spring and fall awards. Since January 2022, 98 communities and organizations in Kansas have submitted requests for funding sources to support community spaces, garden projects, playgrounds, historic building restoration, daycare centers, signage, and much more. Nearly 1,200 sources have been identified with reports coming in that over $853,000 has been successfully awarded to applicants based on those requests. See the article below to learn how you can request a search.

External Funding Opportunities

If you're looking for project funding outside of the Kansas Community Empowerment program, here are some potential opportunities:

For our communities in the Wichita area, the Dwane L. and Velma Lunt Wallace Charitable Foundation funds projects in their areas of interest: arts and culture, community development and enhancement, education, quality of life (including health), and social services. Deadlines are April 1 and October 1 each year. To see if you qualify, and for more information, visit: https://kansaswallacefoundation.org/

The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund offers grants for projects in Kansas focusing on the following issues: access to healthcare, thriving children, and engaged congregations and communities. Learn more about these focus areas, how they fund, and contact information, visit: https://healthfund.org/a/

Invest in Others has a grant opportunity - Grants for Good. Those working in/serving your community in the financial services industry can secure funding for projects on behalf of a nonprofit they support. Grants for Good projects can be arts and culture related, education and youth programs, focused on health and wellness, economic development and human services, hunger and poverty prevention, and supporting the military and veterans. Application period opens September 15 with a deadline of October 27, 2023. To learn more, visit: https://www.investinothers.org/grant-programs/

Additional Funding Resources

Is your community looking for funding to help with certain projects? Let us know what the project is, how much you're seeking, and what your timeline looks like. We have access to multiple external grants databases and likely can give you some links to potential funding sources. Just email us at KSCE@ksu.edu with your request and project idea. If you've utilized Jan for grant searches - KCE/PRIDE community or otherwise - please report back to us on any successes you might have so we can determine effectiveness and continue to provide this service.

You can also reach out to your local Extension office which should have access to the database as well. - Jan Steen, Kansas Community Empowerment Program Co-Coordinator, jmsteen@ksu.edu
