Family Expos Get Children and Families Ready for School

Three events spread throughout the county offer school supplies, resources and fun

The Children’s Trust Family Expo events drew thousands of South Florida children and families looking to prepare for the return of the school year later this month. The events were held on Saturday July 26, at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami, Saturday July 30, at the Sweet Home Community Campus in Cutler Bay, and Saturday August 6, at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex in Miami Gardens.

New Federal Guidelines for Students with Disabilities to Avoid Discriminatory Discipline

In the United States, about 8 million children receive special education services annually, but in recent years the U.S. Department of Education has found that disabled children have been the target of indiscriminate suspensions and expulsions, disciplinary practices that it considers alarming.


In order to ensure that the rights guaranteed by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are properly implemented, on July 19 the Department of National Education ratified the principles that should guide school districts when disciplining students with disabilities.

Fill Out Community Parent Survey on Needs and Interests

The survey is for parents of children prenatal through 18 years old, living in Miami-Dade County and is available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. It should take 15 minutes or less to complete.

Getting School Clinics Ready for a Return to Classes

Trust trains over 340 school nurses, mental health professionals

On August 3, The Children's Trust started its HealthConnect conference, a three-day training event to help prepare more than 340 school nurses, social workers and mental health professionals for the upcoming school year. These health professionals who work on the front lines of health care and mental wellness for students, came together to learn the latest information related to social emotional wellness, school safety, and much more. Day one of the event took place at Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High School, through a partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The last two days of training took place virtually.
