Recent Fair and Fare, Welcoming New Students

Dear Students,

I hope that your semester is off to a great start.

Students on the Danforth campus may recall the launch of the Danforth Task Force on Climate and Culture. I write to share that we have contracted with an external assessment agency, WestEd, to collect data from our graduate and professional students on the Danforth Campus, as well as postdoctoral scholars and other members of the Danforth campus community. Our goal is to understand current experiences and potential areas for improvement. The WestEd team will be visiting WashU on October 3–4, to conduct listening and learning sessions for the community as they relate to mentoring, advising, and support for graduate and professional students and postdocs. I invite you to review the details below and attend a listening session.

I am pleased to announce that WashU’s Chapter of the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society will host its first speaker event on October 2. Dr. Christopher N. Cross, a Bouchet member and alum of Howard University, will share insights into his academic journey and observations working in health equity in an age of misinformation. Engaging with Dr. Cross in the fireside chat will be Dr. Tyriesa Howard, assistant professor in the Brown School and Bouchet member. This event coincides with the launch of the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society application for 2024.

I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities listed below as your schedule allows.

Warm regards,

—Vijay K. Ramani, vice provost for graduate education and international affairs
