RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin is lead author on a study in Health Communication called “Facing the Strain: The Persuasive Effects of Conversion Messages on COVID-19 Vaccination Attitudes and Behavioral Intentions.” The study tested design and effects of two-sided refutational narrative conversion messages and one-sided advocacy messages to reduce vaccine hesitancy related to COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Among the findings for vaccine-hesitant participants, conversion messages increased pro-COVID-19 vaccination attitudes and behavioral intentions. Results also showed that source credibility mediated the relationship between conversion messages and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccinations for participants who scored high in vaccine hesitancy.

Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin recently received approval for an $8,000 KU-sponsored New Faculty Research Development Grant that will further test the utility of narrative conversion messages through a larger sample and an updated COVID-19 context. The study will test new factors such as high and low source credibility to examine moderation and mediation effects, and first-person and third-person points of view to understand potential boundary conditions.

Associate Professor Jerry Crawford’s book, “Journalism at Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Governance and Accreditation,” examines the financial, accreditation and political difficulties of recent years at HBCUs and how their leaders can rise to the challenge. Read the KU News story.
