Phishing/Scam Information
Pastor Matt has had numerous reports that individuals are receiving scam text message alerts from phone numbers that are not associated with his contact information. We're so sorry for the inconvenience or confusion this may have caused and are aware of this scam.
Remember, Pastor Matt and church staff will never ask you to buy gift cards or send money anywhere other than the church office or offering plate. When in doubt, don't engage and call the church office with questions.
| |
What do I do if I receive a scam message?
You can ignore the message, or feel free to have a really long text conversation about Jesus with whoever it is. You might even consider telling them that you know this is a scam because the church has told you they will never ask for gift cards that aren't delivered to the church office. Enough folks doing that might encourage them to move on. Consider reporting the message as spam on your phone (instructions here) and reporting the fraud to the FTC.
| |
Was Pastor Matt hacked?
Neither Pastor Matt nor the church systems were hacked. It appears that someone with bad intentions got a copy of our directory and is using it to target scams that impersonate Pastor Matt.
How do I tell if a message is real or a scam?
If it's not from a church email ending in stmarkslutheran.net or the staff cell phone number listed in the directory, it probably isn't really from church staff. When in doubt, call the church office. Nothing is so urgent it can't wait until the office is open. St. Mark's staff will never ask you to send money or gift cards anywhere besides the church office or the offering plate.

This June our smallest loan will come due with a balance of $46,000. Instead of the low rates to which we had been accustomed, a renewal of this loan would right now come with a 6.5% interest rate. Rather than use the funds entrusted to our congregation to pay interest, our congregation council and finance team would very much like to free up funds for active ministry. Can you help us lose this loan and avoid committing to years of further payments?
Why does the church
talk so much about money?
