The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications will hold a virtual open house Nov. 11 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Central time to offer information about our Ph.D. and M.S. programs. Our faculty work closely with graduate students on research projects in areas including health communication, emerging technologies, environmental communication, multimedia journalism and strategic communication. We are currently accepting applications for the Ph.D. and M.S. programs and look forward to welcoming new students into our collaborative research and teaching community. Grad school podcast

If you are interested in getting a graduate degree but are unsure how to start the application process, check out the Grad Path podcast with host Fernanda Silva, J-School master's student.

How do you choose the university and program you are going to? What documents do you need to have when applying? What should you include in your personal statement? Who should write your letters of reference? Matt Tidwell, assistant dean for graduate and professional studies, and Jammie Johnson, graduate academic advisor, help answer these questions. Listen to the podcast.

RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Associate Professor Teri Finneman's co-edited book, "Social Justice, Activism, and Diversity in U.S. Media History" is now in production. KU alumni Cami Koons and Bella Koscal served as Gen Z editors on the project, and Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye wrote a chapter on "Red Power in Print and Action."

A study by Assistant Professor Judy Watts found that people tend to have more memories associated with older songs and movie clips than newer ones, and they tend to be happier memories as well. Read the KU News story.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas will give the “State of the First Amendment” address for the University of Kentucky School of Journalism and Media on Thursday, Nov. 17, 5 p.m. Central time. Teach a session at

KSPA Winter Workshop

The Kansas Scholastic Press Association will hold a Winter Workshop on Monday, Feb. 13, for its members. Professors and instructors: We hope you will combine the teaching that you normally do on Mondays with our event. Suggested options:

  • Bring your students to help you teach the workshop session.
  • Adjust your session to include your normal KU students and the students visiting campus for KSPA.
  • Cancel class that day to instruct at the workshop.

Regardless, we hope your teaching talents can be part of the workshop, which will run from morning until midafternoon. Rather than our typical breakout session format, students will stick with one subject area for the day. Sessions will be smaller than our typical class sizes so that you can help students produce something impressive during their day on campus. Please email Eric Thomas at ericthomas@ku.edu if you are interested.
