Join us during the holiday season to reflect on the remarkable resilience and potential of the young people we serve at Home Away from Homelessness. Each child who walks through our doors carries a story of courage in the face of daunting challenges—homelessness, poverty, and instability. Yet, within our community, these stories turn toward hope and transformation.
Consider Simon’s journey. When he joined us in 8th grade, life felt overwhelming. Struggling with ADHD and failing most of his classes, he often skipped school and found himself surrounded by influences that led him to the wrong path. Then Simon found Home Away—a harbor of support, belonging, and opportunity where he turned his life around with encouragement from staff, dedicated tutoring, and a warm, home-like environment. Today, his grades reflect his dedication, boasting a 3.8 GPA. He is a role model for his peers and is known for his leadership and kindness during community dinners.
Or take Alexa and her siblings. After fleeing violence and poverty in their home country, they arrived with little more than hope. Living in a shelter while navigating a new language and culture made them feel lost. But at Home Away, they found stability and care. Through weekly therapy sessions, academic tutoring, and case management tailored to their needs, Alexa and her siblings have regained their footing. They are now excelling in school and building a brighter future for themselves and their family.
Stories like these are why Home Away exists. Here, children receive persistent support from a caring community—a village of staff, volunteers, and peers who play, learn, and grow together. It’s a place where young people not only dream but also discover how to achieve those dreams.
Every child deserves a chance to thrive, and at Home Away, we make that possible by providing academic support, social-emotional growth opportunities, and new experiences that open pathways to success. Together, we are breaking the cycle of poverty and helping youth rewrite their stories.
