The National Science Foundation’s Plant Biotic Interactions program supports research on the processes that mediate beneficial and antagonistic interactions between plants and their viral, bacterial, oomycete, fungal, plant, and invertebrate symbionts, pathogens and pests. This joint NSF/NIFA program supports projects focused on current and emerging model and non-model systems, and agriculturally relevant plants.
The National Science Foundation’s multi-agency Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases program supports research on the ecological, evolutionary, organismal, and social drivers that influence the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. The central theme of submitted projects must be the quantitative, mathematical, or computational understanding of pathogen transmission dynamics.

The ERC program supports high-risk, high-payoff research centers focused on advancing engineered systems technology and education through multidisciplinary, cross-sector partnerships.
This virtual session will provide a brief overview of key FAQs and focus primarily on answering attendee questions. Attendees are encouraged to watch the June 27 webinar recording (which will not be replayed during this second event) and come with questions prepared!
ERC Program Consultation Scheduling
The ERC program team is providing 20-minute timeslots for optional preliminary proposal consultations. This consultation is not intended to evaluate technical ideas, but to address program fit and other program-related questions.
Prior to the meeting, teams must provide two documents: a 1-page summary of the ERC concept and engineered system, and the accompanying 3-plane chart. These documents should be emailed to nsferc@nsf.gov.

Climate change is making it more challenging for small animals like hummingbirds to reach heights that allow them to evade the impacts of a warming world. A team of researchers set out to study how Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) would adjust to a higher altitude than that of their natural habitat. NSF
The plastics had only been submerged in the ocean off Falmouth, England, for a week, but in that time a thin layer of biofilm, a slimy mix of mucus and microbes, had already developed on their surfaces. Michiel Vos, a microbiologist at the University of Exeter in England, had sunk five different types of plastic as a test. He and his colleagues wanted to know which of the myriad microbes living in the ocean would glom on to these introduced materials. Smithsonian Magazine
An international team of researchers has discovered 1.2 billion-year-old groundwater deep in a gold and uranium mine in South Africa, shedding more light on how life is sustained below the Earth's surface and how it may thrive on other planets. NSF
