2024 Cambridge Classic Powerboat Regatta |
The tradition of boat racing on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is deep. In the early 1900’s Lou Barrett, Jr. and Alfred I. DuPont talked on DuPont’s yacht, the Alicia, after young Barrett caught the industrialist’s eye while “racing around” the Alicia in his father’s boat, the sport was just in its infancy. It is likely neither imagined the impact their little event would have.
Racing right here in Dorchester County, Maryland since 1911, one of the oldest active powerboat races in the country is the Cambridge Classic Powerboat Regatta. This year's race will be held on May 18 & 19, 2024, on the Choptank River. About 70 boats are expected to be on hand to create an exciting two days of racing. Admission is FREE with a $5 a day charge for parking. Food and drinks will be available at the venue.

South Dorchester Folk Muesum to hold lecture on colonial architecture | |
The South Dorchester Folk Museum in cooperation with the Dorchester County Historical Society, will present a free program on Old Trinity Church in its lecture series about local history.
Presented by Rev. Dan Dunlap, “Old Trinity Church: What Colonial Church Architecture Can Tell Us about the Faith that Founded a Nation” will be heard at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 1 at the Robbins Heritage Center, Dorchester County Historical Society, 1003 Greenway Drive, (Maryland Avenue extended) in Cambridge.
In terms of American architecture, historians use the term “colonial” in two ways: any building constructed before the American Revolution; and transplanting one’s culture into a new geographical setting. This second definition often assumes that early settlers from Europe simply brought their old-world architectural ideas with them when they arrived on these shores.

When Wylde Women Dream
For Cambridge artist, Tammy Vitale, things that seem worn, torn or broken to most people are her treasures. She takes these cast offs and dreams up a new life for them by refashioning them into something different and altogether new! Colorful collages and engaging mixed media art pieces come to life under her skilled and creative hands. For March and April Tammy will be showing her collages and mixed media work along with pieces of her beadwork jewelry at the Main Street Gallery where she will be a guest artist. alongside the work of the gallery’s nine member artists.
When asked about the creative spelling of wylde, Tammy explained that she was part of a coop gallery in Southern Maryland where the women artists called themselves “wylde women” to express their open and experimental approach to their art. Wild became wylde to differentiate the word from meanings that might come up in an online search.
When Wylde Women Dream will open on February 29 and run through April 28. Gallery hours are Thursdays through Sundays from 11-4pm through March and 11-5 starting in April. Two Second Saturday artist receptions are planned for March 9 and April13 from 5-8pm. Tammy will be giving a brief artist talk at 6 pm at the April reception. Both receptions are free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. The gallery asks that children under 18 be accompanied by an adult. Tammy will also be giving a fun, family friendly workshop on making tiny totems on Saturday March 2 from noon to 4 pm at the gallery. All are invited to attend.
Main Street Gallery is located at 518 Poplar St. in Cambridge, and is part of the vibrant Arts and Entertainment District. The gallery is currently reviewing work from prospective members and guest artists. Please contact MSG through its website https://www.mainstgallery.net or by phoning 410-330-4659 if interested.
