Share the Road Safely: Tips to Keep Farmers, Drivers Safe This Harvest

As fall harvest ramps up, drivers may notice a seasonal companion on the roadways — farmers moving massive machinery between fields.

“Row crop farmers have spent months cultivating corn, cotton, peanuts and soybeans,” said Alabama Farmers Federation President Jimmy Parnell. “Now, it’s time to get those crops out of the field and into the hands of people who depend on them. Farmers are providing for the folks they share the road with. Those drivers have places they need to get to safely, and their farmer friends do, too.

“We encourage all drivers, whether you’re in a car or a combine, to be alert, slow down and be patient. A little patience goes a long way as we share roads this harvest season.”

Parnell said farmers try to avoid moving machinery during high-traffic times and pull over to allow cars to pass. However, some congestion is inevitable due to speed limitations of farm equipment.

“We know our neighbors are in a hurry to get to school, work or other appointments,” Parnellsaid. “A few minutes is not worth endangering the life of yourself, the farmer or other drivers by passing on a solid yellow line, swerving around a tractor or approaching slow-moving vehicles at high speed.”

Hay & Forage

The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released its latest prediction for winter 2023-2024 weather patterns. This showed a 95% chance of El Nino occurring through March 2024 with a 71% chance of it being strong. El Nino winters for the Deep South mean below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. As northern storms track further south this winter, they will produce more clouds, more rainfall and likely more severe weather. Moisture on the way is great news for producers, as much of Alabama is suffering from abnormally dry conditions according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. View the map here.

Farmers Federation Awards $150,000 to Auburn Ag, Forestry Students

Eighty Auburn University (AU) students reaped the benefits of the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation (AFAF) during the Alabama Farmers Federation annual scholarship reception Sept. 25 at Lazenby Farms in Auburn.

“For decades, the Federation has provided scholarships to individuals preparing for careers in agriculture and forestry,” said Lane, who was raised on a multigenerational farm in Lowndes County. “These scholarships are not just money received to earn a degree. These scholarships are the gateway for the next generation of leaders.”

Scholarships from the Federation have been awarded to AU students since 1983. AFAF was founded in 2009 as a platform to support agricultural education and is in part funded through Ag Tag sales.

Alabama FarmPAC Makes Additional Endorsements for 2024 Elections

New endorsements are:

  • Alabama Supreme Court, Chief Justice — Sarah Stewart (R)
  • Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 2 — Thomas Govan (R)

Federation President Jimmy Parnell said Alabama FarmPAC endorsements reflect the grassroots nature of the organization and are a testament to the candidates’ work to meet with members and hear their concerns.

“Our endorsements are recommended by county presidents or their representatives from all 67 Alabama counties, along with our state board of directors,” Parnell said. “These candidates have spent months traveling the state to meet with county Farmers Federations and individual members.

This process not only speaks to the influence of the Alabama Farmers Federation but also a process that ensures elected officials understand the issues facing their constituents.”

Alabama is under a statewide fire alert issued by the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC). While under a fire alert, permits for outdoor burning are restricted. Anyone who burns a field, grassland or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

The burning restriction was issued due to the current drought, continued lack of rain and high probability of fuel ignition. Click here to learn more from AFC.
