September Round-Up :

  • All the MCDC team met at their office in Thetford for a great training day! It was such a joy seeing everyone.

  • SSEN participated in a webinar by Bounce Back organized by CHSSN. It’s a precious thing to learn that it’s a program given to those dealing with mental health.

  • CHSSN organized another virtual get-together that was about understanding Service Development Information where we collected a great deal of information about the English-speaking commumtiy. Our presenter spoke about the rise of the ESC, the employability of English speakers, its population, language, measure of poverty, socio-economic status, level of education and such. It was informal and helpful overall.

  • Youth Mental Health Initiative (YMHI) held an Intentional Reflection Training where they had a presenter from Apathy is Boring speak to us virtually about the different social media platforms and the nature of our content in order to grab youth's attention.

  • On September 21, we had a beautiful collaboration with Maison des Jeunes Azymut in St. Nicolas. We had about 25 teens attend to make bracelets and they loved their time and showed a great deal of creativity!

  • One of our partners, VEQ, organized Fall Fest at New Liverpool Elementary which we attended and had a successfull day. It was nice meeting and learning about other organizations and entrepreners and seeing the community get together. It was a very successful day!

  • The Book Club members met to discuss the book that was read! Everyone had a great time in a nice and quiet environment.

New Month

OCTOBER

Happy Month of October everyone! This month, we will learn the importance of letting go in life as the leaves from trees we have seen growing high and getting green suddenly are changing colors and dropping one by one. This should be a life experience we should all have in mind. It’s important to let go of the things that bother us and that hang heavily on us to finally feel liberated and then take some break and come back feeling new and refreshed just like the way the leaves come back in the Spring season again, blooming happier, wider and more coloful!

Please note that this month, SSEN will be closed on Oct 24 & 25 for a retreat and on October 28 due to a staff training.

October is...

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

October represents Women’s History Month! “In 1992, the Government of Canada designated October as Women's History Month, making the beginning of an annual celebration of the outstanding achievements of women and girls throughout Canada’s history (source:https://women-gender-equality.canada.ca/en/commemorations-celebrations/womens-history-month/2022-theme.html.) Here is the celebration of these precious individuals who play the most wonderful part of our society every day! The powerful people that naturally hold many unpaid roles that shape our youths, our adults, our planet and our lives!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS

October 1st represents National Seniors Day! The day that marks the wisdom of our world and the endless appreciation of life’s “libraries" because of all the knowledge and goodness they carry and teach from generation to generation! Take the time every day to show some respect, love, appreciation, and care to the seniors in your lives and around you! Happy National Seniors Day!

  • Look back and count your blessings on this October 9th which represents Thanksgiving Day which is a day of thankfulness and gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! We, at SSEN, are very thankful for our community.

WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS MONTH?

We will be having our first Game Night of the season. Are you a fan of board games? Would you like to play with some new opponents? Socialize, chat, meet new people, and enjoy some competitive fun!

CREATIVITY CORNER - HENNA TIME

This month’s creativity Corner is a “Henna Time” that we will be having! It's a cultural way of doing things that we will be introducing to our community! For those of you wondering, Henna is a paste put on the skin and used to make some beautiful patterns that leave an orange stain on your hands for a few days. Orange is a beautiful color that works great for this month. During this evening, we will be having some cultural music and we will be serving tea, hot chocolate, and some healthy and yummy snacks!

There will be an artist who will be providing the material and professionally doing it for you. You, on your side, are free to play with the Henna alone; some samples of simple patterns will be distributed in case you’d like to give it a try.

Places are limited and again, registration is required. Please fill out the form below.

SHARP

Thinking about your physical health...Safer sex for older adults

presented by Crystal Harrison: Education for Prevention Coordinator at AIDS Community Care Montreal

Session Overview:

Older adults have healthy sex lives too! In this information session we will discuss sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections (STBBIs) and safer sex practices. Even if you’re not sexually active right now, this information can still be important for you if you may become sexually active in the future, to protect yourself from non-sexual modes of transmission, and to help educate your friends! Ageist attitudes can cause older adults’ sexuality to be ignored, especially by health care providers and the media. We’re here to get rid of that stigma. Let’s talk about sex!!

Objectives:

To increase awareness about why issues of HIV/STIs and safer sex are relevant to older adults, not just to younger people. To destigmatize diseases/viruses. To promote healthy and fun sexual behavior for older adults!

What's happening in the community?

Hi, my name is Hazel Thornicroft and my passion has always been people!

I have set up various businesses, always with the premise to help people feel valued, healthy and confident in the skin they're in. Giving women the space to be themselves and to feel safe and loved, is the motivation behind everything I do. To give you the time to pre-cook healthy food for the week, I run plant-based cooking classes, every other Sunday. To make you feel confident and happy, I provide holistic facials and skin consultations using plant-based ingredients. Being an entrepreneur here may have its challenges, but the community of English-speaking women I have had the priviledge to meet has been absolutely wonderful. Please do message me and let me know how I can help.
