Judith Puchalski '75 makes $3 million pledge toward new SCA athletics and wellness facility

Judith Puchalski '75 brings student Mia O. '29 to podium during Together Unstoppable kickoff event.

Judith Puchalski '75 has experienced firsthand how a focus on wellness benefits a person’s and community’s overall well-being. A basketball player at both St. Catharine’s and Fordham University, she was a student at Fordham when they built a wellness center, long before centers like these were popular.

Now, she wants to bring an athletics and wellness facility to St. Catharine Academy with a leadership gift of $3 million to spearhead the fundraising campaign, Together Unstoppable, supporting both the school and local community. The Together Unstoppable campaign kicked off on March 16.

“Since I was at SCA, the importance of having a varied wellness lifestyle to support both physical and mental well-being has become increasingly critical. The new center will assist in bringing current and future students to a greater understanding of the importance of total wellness.”

Judy fondly recalls her four years playing basketball at St. Catharine’s. “The comradery, teamwork and dedication to the game are just some of the benefits that I experienced while at SCA. It supported my education by providing me with a physical outlet,” she says.

Looking back, Judy says many of her teachers and coaches “were instrumental in building my confidence level, and providing me the guidance and encouragement to try to be my best in all settings, whether it was in a classroom or on the basketball court.”

She has relied on all these experiences throughout her career in business and finance with a focus on financial forecasting. Judy joined the St. Catharine Academy Board of Trustees in November 2023 and serves on the Audit/Finance Committee.

Career Day inspires students

Alumnae and parents shared their career experiences in fields ranging from nursing to medicine to law to writing and publishing with sophomores, juniors and seniors at Career Day on March 11.

Dentist Sarita Arteaga DMD '82 said, “I am remembering what it was like to be at St. Catharine’s. That was a long time ago but it still has the same values…. If I could reach just one student and give the advice of resilience it is worth it.”

Jania P. ‘26 said, “[Career Day] was very communicative, the people were comfortable. People were very passionate about what they liked and expressed things they disliked with honesty. Both women from Social Work were great. They really changed my perspective of what I want to do in the future and gave me the reassurance I wanted and needed.”

Did you know that Pi Day has been a national holiday since 2009? March 14 was selected because it is the first three numbers of pi, 3.14 and it is also Albert Einstein's birthday.
