Back in April we planted fourteen giant sunflower seeds in a new bed at Gideon’s Garden to commemorate each of the young lives that had already been taken by gun violence in Massachusetts at that point in the year. The photos above are of three of the plants that have grown from those seeds, commemorating the lives – and deaths - of Brima Koroma, Prince Thompson and Ewdy Lopez. I love how different each one is, and how magnificent -- just like those they commemorate, of course.
Now, however, and just three months later, eight additional young people have been added to that list. Their names are: Kianna Paige Barrows; Luis LeBron Luelo; Donya Johnson; Jordan Bridgeman-Dicks; Armando Rodriguez; Adriana Gonzalez; Elis Vizzcarrando; and an unnamed-to-the-public 17 year old boy in Worcester. Think what these young people could have grown up to become… Think what they could have taught and shared with the rest of us….
Let us pray: Gracious One, Holy and True, bring peace to our world and to our country and our state. Surround those who grieve with your love, fill their hearts with your peace, and empower the rest of us to walk with them however we can, and to act in ways that honor the unique and essential beauty of every young person who has been lost. Amen

GIDEON'S GARDEN (Annalise's Edition)

I made an announcement in Sunday’s service about a large grant gift that Gideon’s Garden was given this summer. We are incredibly blessed to receive this gift of $10,000 from an anonymous donor. It is part of our agreement to seep the donor anonymous however I can only say that the gift was dispersed from National Philanthropic Trust.
We will be using this gift money to improve and solidify our Butterfly House infrastructure to ensure it can be successful for consecutive years and be accessible to the most people.

We have already welcomed our volunteer groups to come in and enjoy the flying beauties. The experience of being in the space is quite awe inspiring.
Our focus and longterm effort of establishing perennial plants in the house as well as focusing on special habitat for our residents has made them particularly happy and they have even started mating! We pray and hope for eggs so the cycle may continue.

George the rooster has truly settled into his role as a domesticated pet. He accepts and seems to sometimes enjoy pets from our visitors. He more regularly seeks attention from us as we are sitting in the pavilion.
George provides a fun and interesting experience for our visitors who are nervous around birds and flying things.

It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. Would you like to think about joining diocesan leadership by running for a diocesan committee position? This November, Diocesan Convention will be electing new members for almost all diocesan committees. Please read about the committees, what they do, their current memberships, and whether the incumbents are eligible to run again in the Nomination Booklet. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, the Nomination Form is available here. Deadline for nominations is August 31, 2022.
The following positions are open for election at the 121st Convention of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts:
The Standing Committee: One clerical and one lay member.
The Diocesan Council: One clerical member from the Worcester Corridor, one clerical member from the Berkshire Corridor and one lay member from the Pioneer Valley Corridor.
The Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral: One lay representative for the Pioneer Valley Corridor.
Disciplinary Board: Two clerical members and one lay member.
Provincial Synod: One lay members and one lay alternate.
General Convention 2024: Eight clerical deputies and alternates and eight lay deputies and alternates. GC81 will be held two years from now in Louisville, KY.

God says, “Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls." Jeremiah 6.16
What is God’s will for my life? How do I live my best life? What might this look like? Is what I want truly want what God wants for me? Is what I want best for myself and others? Perhaps there is something I’m missing? Perhaps there is something I’m blind to and can’t see? … these are the kinds of questions that we sit with and wrestle with together in our community of discernment called Loving the Questions.
We believe that you are unique, that you are gifted, and that your story matters. Our community of discernment aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment that honors the Spirit’s unique call to each person — that honors your unique gifts and your unique story.
We meet twice a month via Zoom beginning in September and ending in March. Our primary focus is rooted in prayerful listening to God using a format of group spiritual direction taught by Shalem Institute. Our aim in our gatherings is to listen more deeply and intently to God's gentle and loving desire for each one of us. Or to put it another way, “to stand at the crossroads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies, so that we may walk in it and find rest for our souls.”

In The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B. Du Bois writes: "Another [song] whose strains begin this book is "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen." When, struck with a sudden poverty, the United States refused to fulfill its promises of land to the freedmen, a brigadier-general went down to the Sea Islands to carry the news. An old woman on the outskirts of the throng began singing this song; all the mass joined with her, swaying. And the soldier wept."
About Marion Anderson:
Marion Anderson was the great African American Contralto who was famously not allowed to perform in the DAR Constitution hall and later sang a concert on the National Mall on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with an audience of around 75,000. In 1955 she became the first African American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera.
