Spring 2023 Service-Learning Registration
Get Involved! Weekly service is a ten-week commitment over a semester and works with your schedule! Engage in a wide range of activities serving children, youth, senior citizens, people experiencing homelessness, refugees, people with disabilities, and more.
For students in a service-learning course:

Registration opens TODAY, Tuesday, January 17

Registration closes on Tuesday, January 24 at 11:59 pm
For all other students:

Voluntary registration opens Wednesday, January 25

Registration closes on Friday, January 27 at 11:59 pm
Do not miss your chance to register for service! To learn about, view, and register for available activities during these first two weeks, visit CSSA’s online registration system, GivePulse during your registration window!
If you have any trouble registering for service at all, please come to the CSSA office in SIH-32 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Apply to be a paid Democracy Fellow!
In partnership with the Campus Vote Project, JCU Democracy Fellows play a critical role in motivating their peers and the campus community to take part in nonpartisan democratic engagement activities. This position spans Spring 2023 and Fall 2023, with the possibility for renewal. Fellows are compensated with a $700 spring stipend and a $900 fall stipend. Carroll Ballers Recruitment Event
Do you enjoy playing basketball? Don't miss the chance to learn about one of JCU's meaningful community engagement programs, the Carroll Ballers! Carroll Ballers play basketball, share pizza, and connect with youth at the Juvenile Detention Center weekly.
Attend* the information session the on Thursday, January 19 anytime from 6:00-7:30 pm in the IM Gym (east side) to learn more about the Carroll Ballers program and participate in our three-point, free-throw, and half-court contests.
Prizes will be offered and Carroll Ballers shirts will be available for purchase. This semester, Carroll Ballers is restricted to male participants, but there are other opportunities to serve at the JDC for all students.

Paid Federal Work-Study Opportunity: Carroll Reads
Carroll Reads is a federally-funded tutoring program aimed at helping children in elementary grades develop reading skills. If you are looking for a paid federal work-study position, this is a great opportunity to work with children in the community. Tutors are paid $12.00 per hour for tutoring twice/week, approximately 5 hours per week.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting one-on-one tutoring sessions with students using educator-provided materials.
- Building rapport and cultivating enthusiasm with the children.
- Assisting children in developing their reading and writing skills to reach grade-level expectations.
- Weekly documenting and reviewing student data with the Carroll Reads Site Coordinators to gauge the effectiveness of interventions.
- Regularly checking in with Carroll Reads Coordinators and Student Liaisons for continued training and assistance in tutoring.
- Committing to tutoring two days per week, for ten weeks, over the course of the semester.
