Incoming 2024-25 Kindergarten Students

Dear Families of Incoming Kindergarten Students,

We're looking forward to meeting you and your children who will be joining Sunset Ridge next year.

If you are a family with older siblings already at Sunset Ridge, much of this will be familiar information to you. If you're new to Sunset Ridge, you'll probably find a lot of this information very useful!

Here is a video recording of me talking through this slideshow. The slideshow is full of useful information and links, like for registration or connecting with our nursing staff or afterschool programs and more.

Two important dates to note are -

Thursday, April 25th - You are invited to join me and representatives from our PTA at Sunset Ridge from 4:15 - 5:00pm for an optional Q&A session and tour. You'd be welcome to stay for our Encore Night event as well and see music concerts, art displays, and more from 5:00 - 7:00pm.

Monday, August 5th - This is our Kindergarten Visitation day. If your last name begins with A-L, students are invited to visit the school from 1:00 - 3:00pm. If your last name starts with M-Z, students would visit from 4:00 - 6:00pm. This is a time to drop off kids and give the teachers a chance to get to know them before finalizing class placement.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

May 13th - Normal School Day

May 13th is changing from a non-instructional day to a normal school day for all students and staff. This adjustment is necessary to make up for the instructional time lost.

As you are aware, our school community has faced some unexpected closures this year due to a cybersecurity incident in February and inclement weather in March. These events have led us to reconsider our schedule to ensure we meet our educational commitments for the year.

After careful consideration, we have decided to change the professional development day scheduled for May 13th from a non-instructional day to a normal school day for all students and staff. This adjustment is necessary to make up for the instructional time lost.

We understand that this change may affect your family's plans, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please adjust your schedules accordingly to ensure your child attends school on May 13th.

Your understanding and support are greatly appreciated as we navigate these unexpected challenges. As always, our priority is to provide a safe and engaging learning environment for our students, and this adjustment is a step towards achieving our educational goals for the year.

Dear Sunset Ridge Families,

A few different items here - first, traffic safety. It takes a village, and part of that village is adhering to traffic safety laws. We've had some concerns from bus drivers and parents about people driving past a stopped school bus. It's unsafe and against the law. Please spread the word, honk or otherwise flag drivers who do this, and help us keep kids safe at our bus stops!

Family Engagement Survey - I was so pleased to see that we increased in our scores in all areas related to family engagement compared to last year. Numerically, we averaged between 3.54 and 3.83 on a scale of 4, so that's pretty strong!

As with any survey, there were some low scores and complaints. Two comments said families are not welcome to visit, but we made a commitment earlier this year to be more intentionally welcoming of visitors so we hope those families will give us another chance!

Some negative comments were about a perception of excessive snow days, which I'm so thankful are decisions I don't have the responsibility of making. The same is true about the number of PD Days, but I do try to make sure we spend those days in meaningful ways and provide information to families about them.

And some negative comments were suggesting of the need for more staff - more help in classes, smaller class sizes, more advanced learning, etc. I love the ideas, but this is where it gets tricky! As we do some belt-tightening for next year at the school level as our budget is shrinking by $6,000, we have had to ask and answer, "Where do we cut?"

If we add classroom assistants or make class size smaller or increase our advanced learning FTE ... what should we cut? It's a tough decision.

Anyway, thank you for taking time to fill out the survey, I'm so glad that many families are satisfied with what we're doing, and I encourage any family member to visit the school, get involved, or share your perspectives in ways other than a survey!

A Message from The Music Room

While we are busy getting ready for our concert coming up on Thursday April 25th during Encore Night (5-7pm), I want to share with you a great opportunity to enjoy music with your family. The Madison Symphony Orchestra has a family concert from time to time.

The next one is on Saturday May 18th at 1:00 and is pay what you wish for tickets. For older students, some of the music should be recognizable as we have discussed it in music class. First graders will just be finishing up learning about Peter and the Wolf which is being performed at the concert. There is nothing better than hearing a performance live! I highly suggest this concert and any other live music as a wonderful family activity. Share the music!
