Online Parish Calendar

In the past couple of days, two surveys have been sent to the parish email list. These surveys provide an opportunity for parishioners to share their thoughts about the current state of St. Andrew's, their vision for the future of the congregation, and the characteristics of the rector who would be best able to equip us to live into that vision.

Paper copies of the survey are being sent to those persons who customarily receive parish notices in hard copy due to vision problems or other issues. If you would like to receive the surveys in hard copy, please let me know, and those will be provided to you.

I urge all members of the parish to complete the surveys and submit their responses by September 10.  The responses will guide the Vestry in the search for our next Rector. After the survey results are compiled, there will be congregational meetings to permit parishioners to express any additional thoughts concerning the rector search process.

Quilt Guild Garage Sale:

September 23 - 24

The Quilter's Delight Garage Sale will occur on Friday and Saturday, September 23-24. Sale items will include fabric, quilt notions and supplies, and collections of fabrics that can be used for a project. The ECW will be joining the Guild and sponsoring a sale of gently used jewelry. Your donation of interesting jewelry is welcome and should be given to Velma Schmidt or Mary Jane Helsel in advance of the sale.

Renovation Phase Two Planning Is About to Begin!

Marian Smithson, Coordinator of the Pearson Hall Project Phase One, indicates that members of the initial committee will continue and are ready to begin early planning for Phase Two.

This new phase will include the tiled areas of the main level (back entry into Pearson and areas near the water fountains, including the bathrooms and coat closet).  Carpeting the walkway and nave will also be considered. Mark Vallow of Vallow Flooring recently visited St. Andrew's and measured these areas for later reference and cost estimating.

Phase One is fully paid for and a small amount remains to use as a startup for Phase Two.  Fundraising for Phase Two will begin this fall as soon as a proposal for the cost of materials and labor is prepared.

Committee members include Kathryn Biarkis, Elizabeth Edwards, Julie Hamilton, and LaVernn Wilson.

Are You Aware of the Many Ways You Can Be Involved at St. Andrew's?

Have you been thinking about how you could become involved in a parish ministry this year? Weekend Update is featuring some of our key ministries in each issue through September. This week, we are featuring the Outreach Programs, a wide variety of options to serve others in need. See the information below.

The Outreach Committee is now in its 24th year of ministry with Mary Bohn as the central link for several outreach projects; however, each ministry is organized and carried out independently by each project's leader. Volunteers from the parish are often needed to carry out this array of projects!

Many of the parish's outreach efforts are seasonal and active for a period of one to two months. A few projects run all year. Contact Mary Bohn or a project leader if you wish to become involved.

  •  The School Supply Drive, coordinated by Velma Schmidt was just completed for this year. Over a few weeks each summer, supplies are collected at St. Andrew's and then delivered to the Pantry to be included in backpacks of assistance for needy area children.

  • During the Christmas season, Mary Bohn, as well as most of the project leaders and others in the parish, solicit gifts from parishioners via the Angel Tree then wrap and deliver the gifts and gift cards to needy area families a few weeks before Christmas.

  • Early in each year, JoAnn Nabe promotes the collection of canned soup and canned meat during our annual Souper Bowl drive. The donated items are given to the Glen-Ed Pantry for distribution.

  • A few years ago, Diane Dudding initiated the Scarf Project at the Edwardsville Public Library. In the winter months, Diane, Mary Bohn, and others keep a supply of warm gear available for no charge on a rack at the library.  The need for items has grown significantly since the beginning of this project.

  •  For many years, St. Andrew's collected used shoes for The Shoeman Water Project charity. That project is no longer functioning so St. Andrew's is seeking another outlet for used shoes.

  • Scrip Program –Many parishioners may not realize that purchasing scrip gift cards on Sunday helps fund some of our community outreach projects. Initiated by Fredna Scroggins and JoAnn Nabe, the program continues to help St. Andrew's and the community. A significant gift was given to the Pearson Hall project from Scrip funds.

  • Each year, Mary Bohn or other outreach leaders become aware of an area charity in need and will work to provide assistance. Our parish is a regular contributor of funds for the Faith in Action Thanksgiving baskets and Mary Bohn is currently looking into helping a Metro East charity that is focus on unhoused mothers and their children.
