Skate Park Set for Transformation

Exciting changes are coming to the Qualicum Beach Skatepark, with reconstruction set to begin on February 3, 2025 and complete by Summer 2025. Located between the ballfields and parking lot at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre, the new skatepark is set to become a hub of recreation and positive social interaction for youth, families, and visitors from across the region.

With features such as a “slappy curve” and a “bonk-to-bar,” the skate park promises exciting opportunities for skaters to “ollie, grind, and enjoy.” Designed to cater to a range of skill levels and riding styles, the park will provide a dynamic and inclusive environment.

A Feasibility Study by New Line Skateparks in 2023 highlighted challenges with the current design, describing it as outdated and lacking in flow, terrain variety, and accessibility. Features were noted as being overly steep and unsuitable for skill development, confirming concerns raised by the skateboarding community. The redesign will resolve these issues by incorporating a variety of terrain styles and clear, integrated flow paths.

The skatepark will also bring broader improvements to the Community Park. These include better safety and connectivity through improved sightlines from the Civic Centre parking lot, accessible pathways linking the parking lot and playing fields, and multipurpose seating that serves both the skatepark and nearby facilities.

The Skatepark Design-Build Project has been awarded to New Line Skateparks at a cost of $1,300,000 (excluding GST). Funding has been sourced from Community Amenity Contributions, BC’s Growing Communities Fund, and over $100,000 raised by the local skateboarding community. Local suppliers have also offered their services to the contractor to reduce costs. This remarkable effort reflects the dedication and enthusiasm surrounding the project.
