Logan County Chamber of Commerce Honors

Sterling Regional MedCenter

As Our Member Of The Week

615 Fairhurst St........................................................... 970-522-0122

Sterling Regional MedCenter is the Logan County Chamber of Commerce’s Member of the Week. Accepting the honor are a few representatives of Sterling Regional MedCenter: Faith Blankenship, Dale Wise, Matt Basgall, Tim Graber, Nick Russ, Jason Thyne, Tona Felzien, Launa Deeds, Ned Resch, Jeanie Brown, Nicole Koester, Tham Parks, Travis Harper, Chad Dutton, Tara Amen-Piel, Sara Dorney, Lona Barber, ,Sue Wheelock, Marcela Mendoza, Lisa Haas, James Sewald, Kari Kirkpatrick, Tanya Ramey, Desiree Dempcy, Jami Lenk, Jessie Herrera, Caitlin Baseggio, Ed Liebig, Nathan Nichols, Kristi Helbert, Ron Lynn, Lupe Sandoval, Karalee Anderson, Brock Herrboldt, Chris Molesworth,  Frank Drummond and (not pictured) many more of dedicated faculty and staff who make Sterling Regional MedCenter a great place to work and receive care.

...In the early 20th Century, Sterling was growing quickly. The house located at 416 N. 4th St. served as the town’s hospital, though most patients still received care in their own homes by doctors making house calls. The need for a larger, modern hospital became apparent in 1918 during the Great Influenza epidemic, during which patients were kept on mattresses on the floors of public buildings.

...In response, local activists created the Sterling Hospital Association and raised $80K (the equivalent of $1.5 million today) to fund the construction of a new hospital featuring seven wards and 30 rooms. Sterling Regional MedCenter (SRMC) began as Sterling Hospital built in 1921 at 916 S.7th Ave. In 1932, the Sterling Hospital Association leased Sterling Hospital to the Good Samaritan Society, and the facility was subsequently renamed Good Samaritan Hospital.

...In 1938, the lease was then transferred to the newly formed Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society. A small, rural hospital becoming part of a larger health care system was virtually unheard of at the time. As the community grew, so did its health care needs.

...On a piece of land donated by the Cheairs estate, Logan County Hospital was built in 1954 on the corner of South 6th Avenue and Fairhurst Street. The new hospital added Obstetrics and Radiology service lines as well as

cobalt therapy for cancer treatment. An east-west wing was added in 1959, increasing capacity to 120 beds. An ICU was added to the second floor in the 1970s, and in 1979 the ED became a 24-hour department. In the 1980s, health care delivery changed dramatically from being more inpatient-based to outpatient, leaving many hospitals with large portions of inefficient, obsolete space. ...

...Compounded by economic factors nationally and locally, Logan County Hospital was struggling financially. The Logan County Hospital Board elected to sign the deed over to Lutheran Health System with the agreement Lutheran would build a new hospital that better met the current needs of the community. In 1989, Sterling Regional MedCenter opened, replacing Logan County Hospital.

...The ED, Imaging, and Surgery departments have all been expanded, while the James B. Harrington Center for Kidney Dialysis (currently operated by DaVita), Family Care Clinic, David Walsh Cancer Center, Banner Health Clinic, and a family medicine residency program are all subsequent additions to the facility that bring access and specialty services to the community. SRMC is owned by Banner Health, which was formed in 1999 when Samaritan Health System and Lutheran Health System merged.

...Aside from inpatient and emergency services, SRMC offers primary care, imaging, X-ray, MRI, CT, 3D mammo-graphy, PET/CT, lab, infusion, rehab, sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, wound care, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, and sleep studies, as well as specialty services including generalsurgery, orthopedic surgery, medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, and interventional radiology.

...Sterling Regional MedCenter is located at 615 Fairhurst St, Sterling, CO 80751. For more information

Grants Available To Historic Business Neighborhoods

Colorado’s efforts to help small business, which have produced a plethora of new programs since the beginning of the pandemic, took on yet another new form recently: An initiative to preserve historically and culturally significant business neighborhoods. The Office of Economic Development and International Trade announced the launch of the Community Business Preservation Program, which will award competitive grants of as much as $50,000 to select applicants, along with two years of training and consultation support. Businesses and local sponsoring entities have until January to apply together for the grants. While the state since 2020 has launched loan and grant programs for specific industries (such as arts and culture) or specific types of businesses battered by the pandemic (such as small firms or those owned by members of disadvantaged populations), the latest focus is unique. Groups of two to six businesses that hold cultural, social or historic significance can collaborate with a local government, community-based nonprofit, economic-development organization or business improvement district to apply for funding to help them both preserve what makes them special and adapt to a changing business environment.

October Is Colorado Manufacturing Month

Gov. Jared Polis has declared the month of October 2023 as Colorado Manufacturing Month, which coincides with National Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) on Oct. 6. The governor’s proclamation recognizes Colorado’s manufacturing industry as a vital sector that fuels the economy, creates jobs and fosters innovation. The Colorado Chamber of Commerce is recognizing the state’s vibrant manufacturing industry through the annual Coolest Thing Made in Colorado contest and will announce the winner of this year’s contest on October 19. Additionally, the proclamation recognizes last year’s winner of the Coolest Thing Made in Colorado contest, Innovative Water Technologies, for their water purification system that provides safe drinking water to developing communities around the world. According to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Colorado’s manufacturing sector is a powerhouse. In 2022, manufacturing contributed approximately $32.8 billion to Colorado’s economy, representing a substantial portion of the state’s overall GDP.
