...In the early 20th Century, Sterling was growing quickly. The house located at 416 N. 4th St. served as the town’s hospital, though most patients still received care in their own homes by doctors making house calls. The need for a larger, modern hospital became apparent in 1918 during the Great Influenza epidemic, during which patients were kept on mattresses on the floors of public buildings.
...In response, local activists created the Sterling Hospital Association and raised $80K (the equivalent of $1.5 million today) to fund the construction of a new hospital featuring seven wards and 30 rooms. Sterling Regional MedCenter (SRMC) began as Sterling Hospital built in 1921 at 916 S.7th Ave. In 1932, the Sterling Hospital Association leased Sterling Hospital to the Good Samaritan Society, and the facility was subsequently renamed Good Samaritan Hospital.
...In 1938, the lease was then transferred to the newly formed Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society. A small, rural hospital becoming part of a larger health care system was virtually unheard of at the time. As the community grew, so did its health care needs.
...On a piece of land donated by the Cheairs estate, Logan County Hospital was built in 1954 on the corner of South 6th Avenue and Fairhurst Street. The new hospital added Obstetrics and Radiology service lines as well as
cobalt therapy for cancer treatment. An east-west wing was added in 1959, increasing capacity to 120 beds. An ICU was added to the second floor in the 1970s, and in 1979 the ED became a 24-hour department. In the 1980s, health care delivery changed dramatically from being more inpatient-based to outpatient, leaving many hospitals with large portions of inefficient, obsolete space. ...
...Compounded by economic factors nationally and locally, Logan County Hospital was struggling financially. The Logan County Hospital Board elected to sign the deed over to Lutheran Health System with the agreement Lutheran would build a new hospital that better met the current needs of the community. In 1989, Sterling Regional MedCenter opened, replacing Logan County Hospital.
...The ED, Imaging, and Surgery departments have all been expanded, while the James B. Harrington Center for Kidney Dialysis (currently operated by DaVita), Family Care Clinic, David Walsh Cancer Center, Banner Health Clinic, and a family medicine residency program are all subsequent additions to the facility that bring access and specialty services to the community. SRMC is owned by Banner Health, which was formed in 1999 when Samaritan Health System and Lutheran Health System merged.
...Aside from inpatient and emergency services, SRMC offers primary care, imaging, X-ray, MRI, CT, 3D mammo-graphy, PET/CT, lab, infusion, rehab, sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, wound care, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, and sleep studies, as well as specialty services including generalsurgery, orthopedic surgery, medical oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, and interventional radiology.
