What Era Are You In?
This past weekend, my daughter, my wife, and I, like many pop culture aficionados indulged in watching Taylor Swift’s: The Eras Tour (now streaming on Disney+). We enjoyed the three-and-a-half-hour concert where Taylor sang music that has spanned her already significant career. There was singing, some dancing, and questions about how in the world she changed outfits that fast?!
Whether you are a fan or not, you have heard the name because Taylor finds herself being both relevant and popular (two words that are not always synonyms). As she moved through each “era”, I was amazed as she: adapted her style, the music grew up with her, and she continues to work hard even when singing a “classic”.
As fundraisers, whatever era we find ourselves in we should always be working to adapt (if Covid taught us anything). We should allow our work to evolve with us (don’t assume we know it all). And, even when we’ve been at the work for a while, we should do everything we can to stay fresh and keep learning even if our fundraising program is running like a well-oiled machine.
AFP (AFP-Fort Worth Metro specifically) can help us in the work as we move through eras of our fundraising careers. If you are new to the field, consider participating in Rising Stars gatherings. Wherever you are on the journey, come to our monthly lunches and learn something new - this month come learn more about advocacy and lobbying from Rebecca Montgomery. Join a Peer Learning Group to invest in yourself and others. There are many ways to get involved, so if you are stuck in a rut, shake it off, and come join us!
